LAKE PLACID, New York – The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team defeated Dartmouth, 3-1, to advance to the ECAC Hockey Championship Game for the second time since Quinnipiac joined ECAC Hockey in 2005-06. Quinnipiac improves to 28-3-7 for the year and will advance to the tournament title game for the first time since 2007.
Bobcats' goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) recorded 23 saves to improve to 28-3-7 on the year while also winning his 74th game of his career, good for 19th all-time. Offensively, Quinnipiac benefitted from goals from Connor Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) and Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) – both of whom also had assists – as well as freshman Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia).
Clifton's goal followed by Martin's goal made the duo the 12th and 13th Quinnipiac skaters to score a goal this postseason – the most in Quinnipiac's ECAC Hockey history. In addition, Clifton now has a league-leading six assists as well as seven points in the tournament. Anas has scored in two-straight league tournament games, while Martin also has two points in his last two playoff games.
Connor Clifton put Quinnipiac on the board with his seventh goal of the year, and his first of the ECAC Hockey Tournament, with just under four minutes to play in the first period. Anas set up the goal with his 25th assist of the year. Anas fed Clifton just below the blue line in the Dartmouth zone before Clifton walked around a defenseman and cut back across the crease and flipping a back-hand shot past Dartmouth goalie Charles Grant to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Less than a minute into the second period, Anas gave Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead after he tipped a shot by Tim Clifton in front of the Dartmouth for his 10th power play goal of the year. Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) handed the puck to Clifton who blasted a shot on goal. Anas was able to get his tape on it and re-direct to the opposite post and past Grant who was screened by Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado).
Five minutes later, Martin scored his first career goal to give the Bobcats a three-goal lead. Connor Clifton picked up his second point of the game, and ECAC Hockey Tournament leading sixth assist of the postseason, after he threw the puck on goal and Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) picked up the rebound. MacMaster attempted to stick-handle and get around a defenseman before Grant poked the puck loose. Martin picked up the loose puck on the opposite post and wristed the puck home to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
Quinnipiac will play the winner of the second semifinal match-up between St. Lawrence and Harvard, set to start at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 19 at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, New York.
