HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team lost to Cornell, 5-4, in the second game of its best-of-three ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal series. With the loss, Quinnipiac will host Cornell for the third and deciding game of the quarterfinal series on Sunday, Mar. 13 at 4 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena. Quinnipiac drops to 26-3-7 on the year while the Big Red improves to 16-10-7.
Quinnipiac freshman Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) scored twice and assisted on another goal to become the first Bobcats' defenseman since Dan Henningson to score twice in an ECAC Hockey Tournament game. Henningson accomplished the feat in a 7-5 win at Harvard on Mar. 15, 2008. K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York) and Tommy Schutt (Chanhassan, Minnesota) had a goal and an assist each while Andrew Taverner (Edmonton, Alberta) had two assists.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a two-goal lead late in the first period on a pair of goals by Priskie and Schutt that came just thirty-one seconds apart. Priskie's first goal of the night came after Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) won a battle along the boards and fed Priskie in the face-off circle. Priskie walked in on goal and blasted a shot past Cornell goalie Mitch Gillam for the game's first goal.
Schutt's goal came after Tiefenwerth fed Schutt in the neutral zone before it was played back-and-forth between him and Andrew Taverner. Schutt's cleaned up his own rebound after a one-timer from the slot was left just above the crease. Schutt crashed the goal and punched it past Gillam to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Just under a minute into the second period, Cornell's Mitch Vanderlaan tied the game after scoring on a pass from Jeff Kubiak. Tiefenwerth pushed the Bobcats lead back to two goals, with Taverner picking up his second assist of the night, as the Bobcats jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Cornell's Jeff Kubiak and Matt Buckles then scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 3-3 with less than half of the period to play.
Priskie gave the Bobcats the lead again with just under eight minutes to play in the second period. Schutt picked up his second point of the night after feeding Priskie in the slot for the wrister as the Bobcats took a 4-3 lead.
Cornell's Christian HIlbrich tied the game less than two minutes later off a failed clear in the defensive zone. The Bobcats kicked the puck across their zone before Hilbrich was able to bat it past Garteig to tie the game at 4-4. Hilbrich then picked up the secondary assist when he handed the puck to Dwyer Tschantz. Tschantz moved the puck to Trevor Yates, who walked across the crease and lifted the puck over Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig's blocker for the go-ahead goal and the eventual game-winner.
