Sam Anas Scores Twice To Lead No. 1/1 QU Men's Ice Hockey To 6-3 Win Against Colgate

HAMDEN, Connecticut – Bobcats' assistant captain Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) scored twice and assisted on another goal to lead national-ranked No. 1/1 Quinnipiac to a 6-3 win against Colgate in an ECAC Hockey match-up at High Point Solutions Arena. The Bobcats pushed their unbeaten streak to 10 games (6-0-4) and improved to 21-1-6 overall and 12-0-4 in ECAC Hockey.
Anas extended his team-leading point streak to 11 games with his 19th and 20th goals of the season. With an assist late in the game, Anas now has 10 goals and seven assists in his last 11 games and 20 goals and 17 assists for 37 points for the year.
The Bobcats' special teams were clicking, as Quinnipiac was 3-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. Quinnipiac also out-shot Colgate, 40-32 for the game, with goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) stopping 32 of Colgate's 35 shots on goal.
Connor Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) had a goal and an assists while Tim Cliifton (Matawan, New Jersey) scored his 14th goal of the year. Devon Toews (Abbotsford, Britsh Columbia) had an empty-net goal and two assists and freshman Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario) gave Quinnipiac a lead late in the second period.
Anas put Quinnipiac on the board just five minutes into the first with his team-leading 19th goal of the season on the power play. Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) held the puck on the boards before sending it across the Raiders' defensive zone to Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado). Smith touch-passed it to Anas in the slot who blasted a shot past Colgate's Charlie Finn to put the Bobcats in the lead, 1-0.
A back-and-forth battle over the final fifteen minutes of the first period ended with Quinnipiac hosting a1-0 lead. Colgate's Ken Citron scored just under three minutes into the second period to tie it after he picked up a loose puck in the Bobcats' zone.
Less than two minutes later, the Bobcats regained the lead when Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) picked up the puck in the neutral zone and took off into the Colgate zone. St. Denis danced around two defenders before stepping behind the Colgate goal. Connor Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) was waiting on the door step for St. Denis' pass, which he deposited between Finn's pads to give Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead.
Four minutes after Colgate's first goal, Tim Harrison tied the game at 2-2 with his seventh marker of the year. Jake Kulevich fired a shot on goal from the point that Garteig turned away with his shoulder before Harrison picked up the rebound and banged it home to even the score.
Late in the period, Quinnipiac found itself on a 5-on-3 power play, with a face-off in the Colgate zone. Andrew Taverner (Edmonton, Alberta) won the draw to his left where Tommy Schutt (Chanhassan, Minnesota) tipped it back to freshman Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario). Shiplo powered through Colgate's defense and beat Finn five-hole to give Quinnipiac a one-goal lead heading to the second intermission.

Anas' shot was knocked down by Finn before Landon Smith and Tim Clifton were left swiping at the loose puck before Clifton banged it home to give Quinnipiac a two-goal lead, 4-2. With three minutes to play, Anas pushed the Bobcats' lead to 5-2 on a pass by Kevin McKernan (Millbury, Massachusetts) before Colgate's Darcy Murphy cut the Bobcats' lead to two goals, 5-3, with two minutes to play. Toews added the empty net goal with less than a minute to play.
Quinnipiac will travel to the North Country to face St. Lawrence on Friday, Feb. 12 a Appleton Arena in Canton, New York before facing Clarkson at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, New York on Saturday, Feb. 13.
