
No. 1 Quinnipiac Men's Ice Hockey Falls To St. Lawrence In Overtime, 4-3

CANTON, New York – National-ranked No. 1/1 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey lost to St. Lawrence, 4-3 in overtime, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Appleton Arena in Canton, New York. The Bobcats fall to 21-2-6 overall and 12-1-4 in ECAC Hockey while St. Lawrence improves to 15-11-2 and 9-6-2 in league play.
Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) scored his team-leading 21st goal of the year to push his scoring streak to 12 games. Anas now has 12 goals and eight assists in the stretch. Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) also scored for the Bobcats to give him 14 for the year, while Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) potted his fifth of the season. Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) recorded two assists to give him eight points in his last four games.
St. Lawrence's Michael Laidley broke a scoreless tie just over seven minutes into the second period. After a flurry of shots on Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia), Laidley found the puck on his stick to the right of the Bobcats net. Laidley hopped over a Bobcat stick, walked across the crease and slipped the puck past Garteig to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
The Saints' lead was short-lived as Quinnipiac responded twenty seconds later. Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) zipped a pass across the blue line to Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) at the opposite point. Priskie saw a host of bodies collecting in front of St. Lawrence goalie Kyle Hayton and send the puck on net. Jonzzon planted himself in front of the Saints' goalie and re-directed the puck past Hayton to tie the game at 1-1.
With less than two minutes to play, Gavin Bayreuther scored on the power play, with assists to St. Lawrence's Jacob Pritchard and Brian Ward. Leading up to the goal, Quinnipiac had killed off 27 of the last 27 power plays before Bayreuther's eighth goal of the year.
Quinnipiac began the third period on the penalty kill after Quinnipiac was whistled for a roughing late in the second period. With a man-down, Toews intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and took off down-ice. Toews waited for St. Denis, who re-directed Toews' pass past Hayton for his 14th of the year to tie the game at 2-2.
Thirty-seconds later, Laidley scored his second of the game when he took a pass from Nolan Gluchowski and wristed a shot under the arm of Garteig to give the Saints a 3-2 lead. Twenty-eight seconds later, it was Anas with his team-leading 21st goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3 with most of the final period to play. Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) and Toews assisted on the play.
Just under two minutes into overtime, St. Lawrence's Brian Ward scored the game-winner when he skated deep in the Bobcats' defensive zone and tipped a shot past Garteig to give St. Lawrence the 4-3 overtime win.
The Bobcats will wrap-up their North Country tour with a stop in Potsdam, New York to face No. 20 Clarkson on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
