The No. 1/1 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against No. 17 Cornell in an ECAC Hockey match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. Quinnipiac runs its unbeaten streak to nine games at 5-0-4 on its way to an overall mark of 20-1-6 on the season including an 11-0-4 record in ECAC Hockey play.
Bobcats' leading scorer Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) had a hand in both of Quinnipiac's goals through the first two periods. Anas is now riding a 10-game point streak in which he has scored eight goals and assisted on six more for 14 points. Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) also scored his eighth goal of the season.
Smith put the Bobcats out in front on the Bobcats first power play of the night when he tipped a blast by Tim Clifton past Cornell's Mitch Gillam to give Quinnipiac an early lead. Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) moved the puck from the face-off circle to the left of Gillam to Anas in the slot. With two defenders closing in, Anas touched the puck out to Clifton at the point. Clifton one-timed a shot on goal that Smith was able to get a stick on and redirect past Gillam to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second period, Cornell tied the game when Patrick McCarron tipped a Bobcat pass in Cornell's defensive zone to Anthony Angello. Angello zipped a pass out to Jeff Kubiak on the wing, who took it the rest of the way down the ice before scoring on the wrap-around for his seventh of the year to tie the game at 1-1.
After several penalties just moments later, the Bobcats found themselves on a 4-on-3 power play with a face-off in Cornell's zone. The Big Red won the draw but Devon Toews picked off a clearing pass at the point. Toews started walking across the face-off circle before wiring a pass across the zone to Anas for the one-timer from the opposite face-off circle to give Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead.
With just under three minutes to play, Mitch Vanderlaan scored his seventh goal of the year to tie the game at 2-2. Patrick McCarron fed Jeff Kubak on the goal line who slid the puck to Vanderlaan in the slot for the wrister as the Big Red knotted the game at 2-2.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6 when it hosts Colgate at High Point Solutions Arena in an ECAC Hockey match-up set for a 7 p.m. start.
