TROY, New York – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey senior captain Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) scored fifteen-seconds into overtime to give the national-ranked No. 1 Bobcats a thrilling 5-4 overtime win at No. 17 Renssealer at Houston Field House in Troy, New York. The Bobcats improve to 23-2-6 overall and 14-1-4 in ECAC Hockey with the win.
Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) set-up the play after forcing a turnover in the neutral zone and finding Jonzzon all alone on the opposite side of the ice. Clifton finished with a goal and two assists while Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) scored the game-tying goal with 2:04 to play in regulation while also picking up an assist. Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) had two assists for the Bobcats for his team-leading 11th multiple-point game of the year. Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) and Kevin McKernan (Millbury, Massachusetts) also scored for the Bobcats. The Bobcats have now gone to overtime 11 times this season and have posted a 4-1-6 record in extended play.
Anas' assist in the first period gave him his 40th point of the year and was the 22nd 40-point season in Quinnipiac's NCAA Division I history since 1998. In addition, Anas' season total now stands at 21 goals and 20 assists for the ninth 20-goal, 20-assist season since the Bobcats joined the Division I ranks.
Anas joins Chris Cerrella '01 as the only two players in Quinnipiac's NCAA Division I history to record two 20-goal, 20-assist seasons. The Bobcats junior, who was an All-American in 2014-15, also accomplished the feat in 2013-14 with 22 goals and 21 assists on his way to earning National Rookie of the Year honors. Cerrella had 28 goals and 24 assists in 1999-00 and 21 goals and 27 assists in 2000-01.
Anas also pushes his team-leading point streak to 14 games. The Bobcats junior has now scored 12 goals and assisted on 11 more for 23 points in his last 14 games while his season total stands at 21 goals and 20 assists.
St. Denis scored just forty-seven seconds into the game when he knocked down a shot through traffic that re-directed past RPI's Jason Kasdorf to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. St. Denis' 16th goal of the season gives him a new personal single-season high after posting 15 goals in each of the past two seasons. Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) picked up his 18th assist of the year while Alex Miner-Barron (Glendora, California) was credited with his fourth assist of the year.
Kevin McKernan (Millbury, Massachusetts) gave Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead with his second goal of the season. Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) pulled the puck off the boards and slid it behind-his-back to Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado). Smith touch-passed it across the Engineers' zone to McKernan, who threw a shot on goal from the face-off circle to the left of RPI's Kasdorf that bounced into the slot. Anas drew a defender while attempting to crash the crease, allowing McKernan to pick up the loose puck in the slot and back-hand a shot past Kasdorf to give Quinnipiac the two-goal lead.
Seconds after a penalty on Quinnipiac ended, RPI's Jimmy DeVito got the Engineers on the board with his second goal of the year. Jake Wood held the puck at the point and wristed a shot through a crowd in front of Bobcats' goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia). DeVito was able to get his stick blade on the puck and tip it past Garteig to cut the Bobcats lead in half, 2-1.
With less than four minutes to play in regulation, Viktor Liljegren dug the puck out of the corner and handed it to DeVito behind the Bobcats goal. DeVito gave the puck back to Liljegren and wristed a shot past Garteig to give RPI a 4-3 lead.
Rensselaer responded with a two-goal second period to take a 3-2 lead. Physical play characterized the second period, as both teams combined for six penalties each, as eight different players found the penalty box in the first five minutes of the period. Despite two power-play opportunities in the second frame, both RPI goals came at even strength. Alex Rodriguez scored his third of the year two minutes in off a rebound on a wrap-around attempt by Kenny Gillespie. Zach Schroeder picked up the go-ahead goal at the 10:21 mark when he cleaned up a loose puck in the slot to give the Engineers the 3-2 edge which stood until the end of the period.
The Bobcats evened the score just under seven minutes into the third on Tim Clifton's (Matawan, New Jersey) 15th goal of the season. On the power play, Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) led the puck at the point and fed Anas at the opposite face-off dot. Anas one-timed a shot on goal that Kasdorf stopped but left above the crease for Clifton to tip-in to tie the game at 3-3.
With two minutes to play, the Bobcats lifted Garteig in favor of the extra skater. Priskie had a shot knocked down from the point, leaving a loose puck for Tim Clifton. Clifton then handed the puck to Toews who fired a shot from the blue line that beat Kasdorf to tie the game at 4-4.
The Bobcats will play their final regular-season road contest on Saturday, Feb. 20 when it takes on Union at Messa Rink in Schenectady, New York. The Bobcats complete their regular-season schedule at home next weekend against Brown for Senior Night on Friday, Feb. 26 and Yale for the 14th Annual Heroes Hat on Saturday, Feb. 27. Both games can be seen live on SNY.
