POTSDAM, New York – Quinnipiac junior Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) scored with 20.8 seconds remaining in overtime to give the national-ranked No. 1 Bobcats a 3-2 win at Clarkson. The Bobcats improve to 22-2-6 overall and 13-1-4 in ECAC Hockey. With the win, Quinnipiac clinches a bye in the first round in the upcoming ECAC Hockey tournament.
Quinnipiac freshman Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) put Quinnipiac on the board and Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) scored his 15th of the year to tie the game late in the third period. Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) kept his scoring streak alive with his 18th assist of the year. For Anas, the Bobcats junior now has 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points in a 13-game point streak.
Toews set-up St. Denis with the game-tying goal while Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) and Andrew Taverner (Edmonton, Alberta) all had assists in the game. In goal, Bobcats senior Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) had 30 saves for his 68th career win, good for 28th in NCAA Division I history.
Priskie's second goal of the year came just under twelve minutes into the second period. The Bobcats' freshman started the play on the left side of the ice when he fed the puck to Landon Smith in front of the Bobcats' bench. Smith handed the puck to Taverner who walked through the Clarkson defense and fired a shot on Golden Knights' goalie Greg Lewis. Lewis stopped Taverner's bid but deflected it to the opposite post where Priskie was waiting to hammer home the puck to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived as Clarkson answered less than two minutes later. The Golden Knights had an odd-man rush that saw Jeff DiNallo feed Troy Josephs at center ice. Josephs then skated deep into the Bobcats' zone and dropped a pass back to Kevin Tansey in the right face-off circle. Tansery wristed a shot past Michael Garteig to knot the game at 1-1.
Late in the third, Clarkson knocked down an attempted clear by the Bobcats deep in Quinnipiac's defensive zone. Perry D'Arrisso picked up the loose puck just below the blue line and skated in one-on-one with Garteig before wristing a shot past the Bobcats' goalie to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead.
Three minutes later, it was St. Denis with a power play for his 15th of the season. After a tripping call on Clarkson, the Bobcats found themselves with a man-advantage. Anas knocked a loose puck out to the point to Toews who fed St. Denis on the wing for the one-timer from the face-off circle to tie the game at 2-2.
With 20 second remaining in overtime Thomas Aldworth (Keller Texas) fired a puck off a Clarkson skate before it settled in front of Toews. Toews walked between the face-off circles and flciked the puck on goal where it snuck between Clarkson goalie Greg Lewis' pads for the win.
The Bobcats are back in action next weekend with their final travel weekend of the regular season when it travels to Rensselaer on Friday, Feb. 19 and Union on Saturday, Feb. 20. The
Bobcats will then host Brown for Senior Night on Friday, Feb. 26 and Yale of the 14th Annual Heroes Hat on Saturday, Feb. 27.
