HAMDEN, Connecticut – Junior goaltender Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) recorded 25 saves to pick up her 13th shutout of the season Friday night as the nationally-ranked No. 4/4 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team blanked the St. Lawrence Saints, 3-0, at High Point Solutions Arena.
Rossman stood on her head through the first two periods on her way to 22 saves before finishing the game with 25, needing just three saves in the third period to preserve her shutout. The win was also Rossman's 24th of the season, one shy of tying Chelsea Laden's program record set just one season ago.
Quinnipiac rebounded for the victory after losing just their second game of the season last Saturday at nationally-ranked No. 10/10 Colgate. Samoskevich gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead just 5:31 into the first period to give her a goal in five of the last six games. After a turnover in the offensive zone, Woods took control of the puck just by the blue line and skated down the slot. Woods dangled the puck between her legs before working a pass to Samoskevich on her right. Samoskevich fired a shot past St. Lawrence goaltender Grace Harrison's blocker side.
Later in the first period, Woods kept the Bobcats ahead 1-0 with huge defensive play. After Rossman struggled to cover up the puck in front of the net, St. Lawrence gained control of the puck with Rossman still sprawled on the ice. Justine Reyes fired a shot towards the open goal, but Woods slid in front of the puck on the goal line to block the shot.
The Bobcats took at 2-0 lead with 9:44 to go in the second period with Brown's tally. Tamberg fired a pass across the offensive zone from the right point to Kosta on the weak side. Her initial shot was slowed down by Harrison but the puck skidded into the crease where Brown swiped the puck into the net as she skated past the goal.
Quinnipiac's defense stepped up once again with just under seven minutes to play in the second period when Rossman initially stopped an Amanda McClure shot but the rebound ricocheted off the end boards out to a St. Lawrence skater and Rossman quickly slid to the left post to make another huge save.
Woods added an empty net goal with 3:59 left in the third period to secure the 3-0 win for the Bobcats. After Cianfarano's shot from the blue line went just wide left, she chased down her own rebound in the corner and fired a pass to the front of the net for Wood to tap home.
