Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team travels to Manhattan on Thursday night for an 8 p.m. contest, which will be televised on ESPN3 as part of the MAAC Game of the Week package.
The Bobcats will be looking to bounce back from a road defeat to Saint Peter's on Monday night, which snapped a three-game win streak and left Quinnipiac with some more climbing to do to get into the top five in the conference standings (the top five receive opening round byes in the MAAC Tournament). The Bobcats are now 5-8 in the MAAC, in ninth place, but are only 1.5 games separared from the teams in fifth place (6-6 Manhattan and 7-7 Fairfield), both of whom they play this week.
A year ago, Quinnipiac closed out the regular season at Draddy Gymnasium with a narrow 69-65 defeat. The Bobcats rallied from down double digits in the second half to close within two with just under five minutes left, and a three-pointer from current senior James Ford, Jr. (Hopewell, Va.) cut the lead to three with 1:13 to play. However, the Bobcats missed a tying three-pointer in the final seconds and current senior Shane Richards grabbed the defensive rebound and hit one foul shot to clinch the win.
Richards and Ford will likely match up quite a bit on Thursday night. Richards currently ranks fourth in the MAAC in scoring at 18.1 points per game, while Ford has typically drawn the assignment of the other team's top perimeter scorer. So far this season, Ford (with help from his teammates) has held the top five scorers in the MAAC, who combine to average 20.1 ppg, to only 12.6 points in five contests. That list includes two meetings with Justin Robinson of Monmouth, one with A.J. English of Iona, one with Khallid Hart of Marist and one with Marcus Gilbert of Fairfield.
The game will feature a contrast in styles, as Manhattan relies on pressure defense and guard play to force a lot of turnovers, while Quinnipiac's claim to fame is being one of the top rebounding teams in the country. The Bobcats currently rank first in the nation in both total rebounds (44.7 rpg) and offensive rebounds (17.6 per game) and have led the nation in at least one rebounding category for each of the last five years. Freshman forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) is sixth in the MAAC in rebounding (6.8 per game) and ranks fourth nationally in offensive rebounds per 40 minutes (6.35). Manhattan, meanwhile, only pulls down 29.0 rebounds per game and a has a -7.2 rebounding margin per game, which Quinnipiac will hope to exploit.
After facing Manhattan, the Bobcats will have a quick 36-hour turnaround before hosting Fairfield on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game that will be televised on SNY. Quinnipiac won the first meeting between the schools 64-59 behind a career-high 25 points from senior guard Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.) on Feb. 1.
