FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's soccer clinched the 2016 MAAC Regular Season Championship on Wednesday night at Lessing Field, topping Fairfield, 1-0, to earn its eighth conference win of the season. The program has now won four regular season conference titles in the last five years (2012 in the Northeast Conference and 2013, 2014 and 2016 in the MAAC).
With the win, the Bobcats earn the No. 1 seed heading into the postseason conference tournament. Both MAAC Semifinal games and the MAAC Championship will be held at the QU Soccer Field in Hamden on Nov. 11 and Nov. 13, respectively.
Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, New Jersey) scored Quinnipiac's lone goal in the 25th minute off a free kick, and Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece) registered his seventh shutout of the season in the win.
The Bobcats had a great chance to break the tie just moments into the game. Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Connecticut) streaked up the right side of the field past a Fairfield defender with the ball, then crossed it to Eamon Whelan (New Fairfield, Connecticut) in front of the net. Whelan's quick shot went just wide of the net, keeping things scoreless.
Ryan Scheiderman got Quinnipiac on the board with 19:14 left in the first half. Scheiderman blasted a free kick into the lower-left corner of the net to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. The goal is the senior's fifth of the 2016 season.
Iakovidis made five saves in total, non bigger than when he was quick off his line to stop a deflection with 18:55 left in the game. Whelan and Dally both recorded five shots.
The victory caps off a historic 2016 regular season for Quinnipiac, as the program won seven-straight conference games for the first time in program history.
