HAMDEN, Conn. - Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament top seed Quinnipiac defeated Canisius, 3-1, in a semifinal match-up at the QU Soccer Field in Hamden, Conn. With the win, Quinnipiac advances to the MAAC Championship Game on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. against the winner of the tournament's other semifinal game between Siena and Rider. The Bobcats improve to 13-6-0 on the season while Canisius' season ends at 8-8-2.
All-MAAC Second Team selection Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Connecticut) set-up the Bobcats first goal before punching in his fourth goal of the season midway through the second half. Matthew Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) and MAAC Rookie of the Year Eamon Whelan (New Fairfield, Connecticut) also scored for the Bobcats while William Pustari (North Haven, Connecticut) picked up an assist. In goal, MAAC All-Rookie selection Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thesseloniki, Greece) stopped three of the Golden Griffins' four shots on goal.
Taylor put the Bobcats on the board in the 14th minute of play after a Canisius defender knocked down a shot in the box by Dally. Taylor was waiting in front of the Golden Griffins' goal to pick up the loose ball. He slid the ball to his right past Canisius keeper Marco Trivellato to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead. Less than six minutes later, Whelan scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season to stake the Bobcats with a two-goal lead. Dally picked up a loose ball on the opposite side of the field from the Bobcats bench. He blew past his defender and walked across the goalline before centering a pass to Whelan who hammered it past Trivellato to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Coming out of halftime, Canisius cut the Bobcats lead in half with a beautiful play into the box that resulted in a goal by Thomas Teupen. Mo Kretschmer held the ball from just outside of the box before finding a seam in the Bobcats' defense and zipped a pass to Matthew Santos. Santos touched the ball to the opposite post to Teupen who converted to make it 2-1 with most of the second half to play.
Five minutes later, Pustari won the ball at midfield and fed it into the box to Dally who spun around his defender and found himself one-on-one with Trivellato. Dally gave Trivellato a head fake and toed the ball to the opposite corner to push Quinnipiac's lead back to two goals at 3-1.
