CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) made a career-high 38 saves and recorded her fifth shutout of the season on Friday afternoon at Conte Forum as No. 3/3 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey played to a scoreless tie vs. No. 6/7 Boston College.
Rossman's 38 stops are the most a goaltender has made during a shutout in Quinnipiac program history. The previous record was held by Victoria Vigilanti - who made 37 saves on Feb. 5, 2010 at Cornell.
Rossman also now has 23 career shutouts, needing only three more for the program's career record.
The Bobcats move to 5-2-0 (0-0-0 ECAC Hockey) with the tie, while Boston College is now 3-2-2 (3-1-0 Hockey East).
Quinnipiac had a good opportunity to break the tie with just over three minutes left in the first period. Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) and Kenzie Lancaster (Waxhaw, North Carolina) skated into the offensive zone with a 2-on-1 advantage, and Turner fired a shot toward net off Boston College goalie Katie Burt's blocker. The rebound went toward Lancaster, who was almost able to get her stick on the puck before it was knocked away by an Eagles' defender to keep things scoreless.
The Bobcats had another great chance less than four minutes into the second period on the power play. Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) got free with a good look at the net, but rifled a shot right at Eagles' goaltender Kate Burt and things remained scoreless.
Boston College had a chance in the beginning of the second period. Makenna Newkirk carried the puck down the far side and fired towards net – but Rossman made a pad-save, then stopped a rebound with her blocker to keep things tied.
Then, with a 5-on-3 advantage, Boston College had a flurry of chances with just under seven minutes to go in the period. Rossman made a series of saves to keep the game scoreless, including a big stop on Kristyn Capizzano's redirect - keeping the game tied 0-0.
The Eagles outshot Quinnipiac 13-6 in the third period, then 4-2 in overtime – but Rossman was there to preserve the shutout.
The Bobcats are no 4-2-2 vs. ranked opponents over the last two seasons. Quinnipiac and Boston College face off again tomorrow – Saturday, Oct. 21 – at 3 p.m. from High Point Solutions Arena in Hamden.
