CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts – Melissa Samoskevich's (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) first period power-play goal proved to be enough as the nationally-ranked No. 4/4 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team earned its first win in program history at Harvard as it knocked off the Crimson, 1-0, Friday afternoon at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
"To have that feeling in our locker room at the end of the game was pretty outstanding and was one where it was a full team effort today," head coach Cassandra Turner said. "If you go through our entire lineup, I think you can say that everyone gave their best effort; their best effort in the little things like blocking shots, good sticks, prepared to make the plays we need to make to play in all three zones and to be able to play a 1-0 game against a good hockey team."
Heading into the game, the Bobcats were 0-11-0 all-time at Harvard dating back to their first meeting in 2005. Friday's win also gives the Bobcats their first regular season sweep of the Crimson in program history and just the second time Quinnipiac has ever won back-to-back games against Harvard.
The Bobcats maintained their stronghold atop the ECAC Hockey standings as they improve to 21-1-4 (11-1-3 ECAC Hockey) while they extended their unbeaten streak to 19 games and winning streak to five games with the win. Harvard drops their fourth game in their last five to fall to 11-8-1 (8-6-1 ECAC Hockey).
Samoskevich's tally was her first career power-play goal and 12th overall goal of the season. She is second on the team with 12 goals and 26 points after the tally.
Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) picked up 20 saves in the victory for the Bobcats as she moved back into a tie with Wisconsin's Ann-Renee Desbiens for the most shutouts in the country. Rossman's victory was also her 21st of the season, the second most in the country.
Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) recorded her team-leading 19th assist of the season on Samoskevich's goal, pushing her one assist shy of the ECAC Hockey lead. Woods finished the game with 24 points on the season, her third straight season with at least 24 points in her career.
Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) tied her single-season career-high for assists with her 13th of the season on Friday to give her 15 points on the season. Tamberg's 15 point season is the first by a Quinnipiac defenseman since Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) in 2013-14.
The Bobcats dominated the play throughout the game, outshooting Harvard 38-20 in the contest, including a strong 14-5 advantage after the first period. Quinnipiac's 38 shots on goal were the most they have recorded against Harvard in program history.
Samoskevich gave the Bobcats a 1-0 just 6:52 into the first period and 25 seconds into their first power play of the game. Tamberg fired a shot from the point that was deflected on by Woods and saved by Maschmeyer. The puck came loose at the top of the crease, and Samoskevich crashed on the rebound to wrists home the shot through traffic and past Maschmeyer for the goal.
Rossman made numerous big time saves to preserve the 1-0 lead throughout the second and third periods, most notably on a late breakaway in the second period with Harvard's Michelle Picard on the rush and Rossman was able to make the key glove save.
The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team travels to Hanover, New Hampshire to take on the Dartmouth Big Green at Thompson Arena on Saturday afternoon at 3:05 P.M.
