
No. 1/1 QU Men's Ice Hockey Scores Two Late Goals to Tie Maine, 3-3

ORONO, Maine – The nationally-ranked No. 1/1 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team scored two goals in the final 6:01 of regulation to come from behind and tie the Maine Black Bears Tuesday night at Alfond Arena.
Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) started the Bobcats rally with 6:01 to play in the third period to bring the team within a goal. Derek Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota) dropped off the puck for Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) who found Anas with a pass. Anas skated the puck from the left faceoff circle to the point where he wristed a shot through traffic. The puck was mishandled by McGovern and trickled over the goal line to cut Maine's lead to 3-2.
Thomas Aldworth (Keller, Texas) scored the game-tying, extra attacker power play goal with just 46.6 seconds left in regulation to salvage a tie for Quinnipiac in their final non-conference game of the season. After Anas had a shot blocked and he got his own rebound, he found St. Denis on the back door with a pass through the slot. St. Denis' shot was saved by Maine goaltender Rob McGovern and Steven Swavely attempted to clear the puck. Anas knocked down the clear attempt and hit Aldworth with a pass on the left wing where he stepped into a shot and sniped it in the upper left corner to tie the game at 3-3.
The Bobcats have now scored 47 of their 90 goals in the final 10 minutes of a period after the two late third period goals. Quinnipiac extended its unbeaten streak to six games with the tie while improving its record to 19-1-4 on the season. Maine's record sits at 5-13-6.
Goaltender Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) made big save after big save for the Bobcats all night long on his way to 29 saves in the game despite allowing three goals in the contest. After making 14 saves in the first period, the Bobcats defense locked down and Garteig made 18 saves in the final two periods.
Aldworth's goal was his fifth of the season for the Bobcats and second in the last three games. The goal was Aldworth's second career power play goal and first career game-tying goal.
Anas recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Bobcats with two points. Anas' goal was his 14th of the season, the most on the team and in ECAC Hockey while the as well picking up his 14th assist of the season for his league-leading 28th point.
Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) scored his second goal of the season in the first period of the game to give the Bobcats an initial 1-0 lead while picking up his 10th point.
Smith picked up the other point in the game for the Bobcats with his assist on Anas' third period goal to give him 11 assists and 14 points on the season.
MacMaster gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead 6:09 into the first period on a great individual effort. MacMaster won the faceoff in the left circle and chased down the puck in the corner. After a Black Bear touched the puck behind the goal, MacMaster stole the puck back before he turned and fired on the right side of the goal, banking the shot off McGovern's right leg for the goal.
The Black Bears tied the game just over four minutes later on Steven Swavely's team-leading seventh goal of the season. Swavely won the faceoff in the offensive zone back to linemate Dane Gibson. Gibson fired a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle where it was saved by Garteig. The rebound jumped off Garteig's chest and settled in the slot where Swavely blasted the puck past Garteig's blocker side.
Nolan Vesey gave Maine a 2-1 lead 1:18 after their first goal of the game. Jack Musil's initial shot was blocked but he got his own rebound and pass the puck down to Cam Brown. Brown shifted the puck behind the Bobcats' net to Blaine Byron who found a wide open Vesey on the back door to one-time home the goal.
Maine added a third goal just 34 seconds into the second period to take a 3-1 lead over Quinnipiac. Gibson picked off a Bobcats clear attempt in the neutral zone where he dumped off the puck for Brendan Robbins. Robbins skated into the offensive zone and sniped a shot past Garteig for his first career goal.
The Black Bears held their strong two goal advantage until Anas and Aldworth brought the Bobcats back to pick up the tie with their third period comeback.
