HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team will look to sweep the season series from Canisius when it hosts the Golden Griffins for a 2 p.m. contest at the TD Bank Sports Center on Sunday.
The first meeting between the two schools came right down to the final buzzer, as the Bobcats escaped Buffalo with a 78-76 win back on Dec. 5. Quinnipiac was playing its first game without starting forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.), who had been injured the day before at Niagara, and also played for 20 minutes without leading scorer Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.), who was injured in the first half and did not return until the final 10 minutes.
Despite playing shorthanded, Quinnipiac dug its way back from a double-digit deficit in the first half to take the lead at the half, when sophomore guard Ayron Hutton (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit a 70-foot shot at the buzzer, which ended up the No. 4 play of the day on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10. The Bobcats forged ahead by double-digits late behind McLean, who had 10 of his 12 points down the stretch, but had to hold on as Canisius nearly rallied back from a 10-point deficit in the final 40 seconds. After Quinnipiac had two turnovers and missed the front end of two one-and-ones down the stretch, Chris Atkinson shot a three-pointer with four seconds left that would have given the Golden Griffins the win, but it hit off the rim and two tying putbacks missed the mark as the final buzzer sounded.
It was the second straight meeting between the teams that came down to the wire. A year ago, Canisius won at the TD Bank Center in February 68-66 as Kassius Robertson hit the winning jumper with four seconds left. Quinnipiac had one last chance for some buzzer-beating heroics, but was unable to get a shot off before the horn sounded.
McLean comes into Sunday's game as the only Bobcat averaging in double figures in scoring (15.1 ppg), ranking 11th in the MAAC. Junior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla.) nearly averages in double figures as well, raising his average to 9.7 after 19 points on Saturday at Monmouth, including five three-pointers, and 13 points on Friday against Siena. Daniels returned to action against Monmouth with six points and five rebounds, and had 10 points and eight boards off the bench on Friday against Siena.
