KINGSTON, RI – The Quinnipiac men's soccer team were unable to capitalize on their first goal of the season, falling to the Rhode Island Rams, 2-1, after giving up two second half goals. Freshman Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Connecticut) scored his first career goal in a Bobcat uniform to give Quinnipiac a lead heading into the break. Freshman teammate Matt Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) provided his first career assist on the score.
The Rams (3-2-0) outshot Quinnipiac (0-3-1) 10-8 in the game and 4-3 in shots on goal as the Bobcats tallied three more corner kick opportunities and had zero off sides to Rhode Island's five, but it was not enough to capture a second score.
After 24 minutes of scoreless action, the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead off Dally's first goal. Taylor was credited with the assist, setting up the Connecticut native's strike for Quinnipiac's first goal of 2015.
Taylor led the Bobcats with two shots in the opening 45 minutes. Both sides recorded four shots with URI tallying two shots on goal to Quinnipiac's one.
The Rams had a strong change at tying the game with six minutes to go in the half, but the Bobcats' defense kept their line and URI was called for off sides. With under a minute to play, junior goalkeeper Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ontario) stopped the Rams only shot on goal and the Bobcat defense blocked a second shot attempt from close range to preserve the lead heading into the break.
Early in the second half, Rhode Island's Dante Lamb beat Henry with his second goal of the year. The Rams tied the game at one all in the 56th minute thanks to a perfect through ball and assist by Ryan Bailey. Bailey fed Lamb from just outside the box who took a couple dribbles to score at a tough angle.
About 12 minutes later, the Rams executed two flawless passes to find Bailey for URI's second goal, giving them a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute.
Quinnipiac had a couple good looking chances at tying the game in the final minutes, but could not find the back of the net for a second time. In the 89th minute, freshman Oscar Evans (Christchurch, New Zealand) connected for a header, but sent the ball wide.
Another opportunity came with seconds to go, but the Ram goalkeeper made a save on Ryan Scheiderman's (Brick, New Jersey) last effort attempt.
Dally led Quinnipiac with three shots in the game including two on goal. With the win on Saturday night, the University of Rhode Island improved to 4-0 all-time against the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac will return home for their second game in Hamden on Wednesday, September 16th. The Bobcats will host Holy Cross at 4 p.m. from the QU Soccer Field. Last season, QU lost to the Crusaders, 2-1, in Worcester.
