PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – Nationally-ranked No. 3/2 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey posted its third consecutive shutout in a 3-0 win against Brown at Meehan Auditorium. The Bobcats pushed their unbeaten streak to 17 games to open the 2015-16 season and stand at 15-0-2 while also improving to 6-0-2 in ECAC Hockey. The Bobcats win at Brown signalled the first time in Quinnipiac's 41-year history that the team has posted three consecutive shutouts.
Michael Garteig's (Prince George, British Columbia) legend continued to grow as the Bobcats' goalie tied his own single-season record with his sixth shutout of the year and 17th of his career. In addition, Garteig has now gone 194:49 since allowing a goal, breaking Jamie Holden's 12-year old record of 191:15 he set during the 2003-04 season.Garteig has given up just two goals over the last seven games, posting a 0.29 goals-against average and a .987 save percentage in that span.
Quinnipiac junior Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) scored his team-leading 10th goal of the year, while also picking up an assist to lead the Bobcats. Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) scored his second goal in as many nights and Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) scored his third of the year.
Quinnipiac jumped out to an early lead on its first shot-on-goal of the afternoon. Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia) won a battle along the boards and sent it to Connor Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) at the blue line. Clifton skated between the face-off circles and fired on goal where his brother, Tim, was waiting for the tip-in. The goal was the only offense of the first frame for the Bobcats, who were uncharacteristically out-shot by Brown, 11-4. The goal was Tim Clifton's second of the weekend after converting on Friday night against Yale.
Late in the second period, the Bobcats found themselves on their first power play of the game after Brown was whistled for Too Many Men. K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York) crashed the boards and won a puck against a Brown player, sending into the corner to the right of Bears' goalie Tim Ernst. Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) skated along the boards before finding Landon Smith open in the slot for the one-timer. The goal was also Smith's second of the weekend.
Jonzzon, the Bobcats' captain, dished out a pair of assists against Yale on Friday night before he picked up his third point of the weekend on his third goal of the year less than two minutes later. Derek Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota) took control of the puck deep in the Bobcats' defensive zone and fired it up-ice to Tim Clifton. Clifton took control of it at the blue line in Brown's defensive zone and centered a pass to Jonzzon between the face-off circles for the re-direct past Ernst to give Quinnipiac a three-goal lead.
The Bobcats return home for their final game of the first half of the year when they host Boston University on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. The Bobcats' non-conference match-up against the Terriers can be seen live on SNY, where available.
