HAMDEN, Connecticut – Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) scored the lone goal for the nationally-ranked No. 2/2 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team in a 4-1 loss to No. 12/11 Boston University in front of a 3,657 at High Point Solutions Arena. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 15-1-2 (6-0-2 ECAC Hockey) as their 17-game unbeaten streak and four-game winning streak came to an end. The Terriers improved to 9-6-3 (4-3-2 Hockey East) with the victory.
Anas gave the Bobcats an early lead after he took a feed from Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) and deposited his team-best 10th goal of the year. Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) quarterbacked the play, handing the puck to Smith on the wing. Smith then put the puck on Anas' stick in the face-off circle to the left of BU goalie Sean Maguire. Anas made a move around a defender, walked across the crease before backhanding a shot over a diving Maguire for the game's first goal.
With the goal, Anas moves into a tie for first on the team and in the conference in goals scored while his 19 points are the most in the conference. Priskie's 12th assist of the season also moves him ahead of Harvard's Alexander Kerfoot for the ECAC Hockey lead in assists.
Quinnipiac's lead was short lived as Matt Lane put the Terriers on the board with just over five minutes to play. Jordan Greenway picked up his seventh assist of the year on Lane's seventh goal of the season.
The goal ended Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig's incredible impressive scoreless streak that spanned 209:21, as well as a streak of 183:03 at home. Garteig's last goal-allowed at High Point Solutions Arena came against Clarkson on Nov. 20, while his last goal allowed overall came on Nov. 27 at UMass.
Early in the third period, Boston University used Robbie Baillargeon's third goal of the season to take a 2-1 lead. Charlie McAvoy stole the puck in his own defensive zone and fed Bailargeon along the boards in the Bobcats' zone. Baillargeon threw a back-hand shot on goal from just above the goal line, tucking it just inside the post to give the Terriers a one-goal lead.
Midway through the third period, Bobo Carpenter potted his fourth goal of the year when he collected the puck just above the face-off circle and threw it on goal. The puck traveled through traffic and caught the opposite post, banging home past a screened Garteig to push BU's lead to two goals, 3-1, with 12:31 to play.
Lane netted his second goal of the game with just 19.4 seconds remaining in the contest with an empty-net goal. After a Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) shot was knocked down in traffic, Brandon Fortunato backhanded the puck out of the offensive zone where Lane skated it into the offensive zone to tuck home the empty-netter.
Quinnipiac will enjoy a 16-day break before it resumes ECAC Hockey play at Princeton on Wednesday, Dec. 29 before the Bobcats host the Tigers on Thursday, Dec. 30 at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center.
