Henry Records 5 Saves in the Shutout
Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – Sophomore Max Rothenbucher's (Munich, Germany) game-winning goal sent the Quinnipiac men's soccer team into the MAAC Championship Quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. After an early first half goal, the Bobcats held on to defeat Canisius, 1-0 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. With the win, the Bobcats improved to 2-10-6 on the year while the Golden Griffins dropped to 8-9-1.
Canisius' offense got off to a fast start in the quarterfinal, forcing Bobcat goalkeeper Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ontario) to make a diving stop just thirty seconds in. Quinnipiac recorded their first shot in the 11th minute, but it wasn't until four minutes later that Rothebucher secured the games' only goal.
At the 15 minute mark, the Germany native received a pass from freshman Matt Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) with a little bit of room to work with. As the defender closed in, Rothenbucher took a couple dribbles and curled his left-footed strike into the top left corner for the score. The goal marked Rothenbucher's second of the season as he left no room for the opposing keeper to make a save.
In the 29th minute, Henry made another spectacular save. Off a Canisius throw in deep in their zone, a Golden Griffin connected for a header just inside the six yard box, but the QU keeper made a last second diving stop, punching the ball wide of net. With nine minutes to go in the opening frame, Henry made a third diving stop to preserve the shutout heading into the second half.
Canisius outshot the Bobcats, 7-1, in the final 45 minutes, but registered just two shots on goal. The Golden Griffins had a great opportunity in the 60th minute, but Mathew Santos ripped a shot just wide of the far post.
The Bobcats' lone shot came with five minutes to go in regulation. Sophomore William Pustari (North Haven, Connecticut) received the ball all alone with just the goalkeeper left to beat, but a great save kept the game in reach for Canisius.
The Golden Griffins tallied just one shot in the final ten minutes as the Bobcat defense held strong and kept possession of the ball. The shutout marked the fifth of the season for Henry
