Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – On Friday afternoon, the Quinnipiac men's soccer team fell to the Rider Broncs, 3-0, in the MAAC Championship Quarterfinal at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. After a scoreless first half, the Bobcats were unable to bounce back from an early second half deficit.
The Bobcats came out of the gates firing offensively in the first half. Just 18 seconds into the game sophomore William Pustari (North Haven, Connecticut) fired a strike from inside the box which was saved at the near post by the Broncs' goalkeeper.
Quinnipiac recorded the second straight shot of the game just a minute later. Junior Liam O'Sullivan (Trumbull, Connecticut) sent a rocket from outside the box just wide of the far left post.
The Bobcats' keeper, Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ontario) tallied five saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless at the break. Rider led in total shots in the opening frame, 7-6.
Coming out of the half, Rider scored two goals in the opening 13 minutes. At the 47 minute mark, Sonimi Halliday broke the game open with a score from just five yards out. Off a free kick from about 10 yards outside the box, Sonimi one-timed the pass to give the Broncs a 1-0 advantage.
At the 50 minute mark, Quinnipiac had a great opportunity to tie the game. Senior midfielder James Greco (Long Valley, New Jersey) sent a free kick into the box and classmate Erik Panzer (Nelson, New Zealand) struck a header high of the net.
About ten minutes after their first goal, Rider took a 2-0 lead of the right foot of Christian Flath. After a Bobcat foul, Flath was rewarded a direct kick from 35 yards out and sent a bender past the outstretched hands of a diving Henry.
With eleven minutes to go in regulation, Rider captured a third goal, beating Henry as he came out to make a sliding stop. Rory Duffy received the ball and found himself with a one-on-one opportunity against the Bobcat keeper for the third score of the half.
Friday's result marks the end of outstanding careers for eight Quinnipiac seniors and one graduate student – Greco, Panzer, Stevenson Hawkey, Tanor Jobe, Justin Kody, Nick Lasewicz, Simon Brossier, Tobias Esche and Joe Da Graca.
