Hamden, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's soccer team heads to Kissimmee, Florida for the 2015 MAAC Championships, which will be held at the Wide World of Sports Complex from Nov. 5-9.
The Bobcats will be the No. 10 seed in the field and will face No. 7 Canisius in the first round on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 12:30 p.m. The winner will then move on to the quarterfinals on Friday against No. 2 seed Rider, which earned an opening round bye. The semifinals and finals will be played on Sunday and Monday, with Monday's championship game winner earning the MAAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Quinnipiac will be competing in the MAAC Tournament for the third straight season in its three years in the league. A year ago, the Bobcats were the top seed and hosted the semifinals and finals, but fell to Fairfield on penalty kicks in the semifinals. Two years ago, Quinnipiac tied for the regular season title and earned the postseason championship with penalty kick wins over Iona and Monmouth, earning its first-ever NCAA Division I berth.
The Bobcats also tied for the regular season title in its final season in the Northeast Conference in 2012 and fell in penalty kicks in the semifinals of that tournament. As a result, the senior class has played in four tightly-contested tournament games in the last three years and comes into this weekend battle-tested, albeit facing a tougher road than they've previously faced, needing to win four games in five days in order to earn the title.
"We are going down there with the mindset that we want to win this tournament," said Head Coach Eric Da Costa. "We haven't had the regular season we hoped for, but if we made the tournament as the fifth or sixth seed in a normal season, we'd absolutely go in thinking we want to win it. This is no different. We've got a lot of guys who have played in these types of games before, and I'll take my chances with them."
Leading the way is the senior nucleus of defenders Tobias Esche (Bremen, Germany), Erik Panzer (Nelson, New Zealand - pictured) and Stevenson Hawkey (Pennington, N.J.), who have been regular starters on defense throughout their careers. Esche and Panzer were the center back combination on Quinnipiac's 2013 title team, with Hawkey as an outside back.
Offensively, the Bobcats will be looking for a spark this week, as three players are tied for the team lead with two goals apiece, junior forward Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, N.J.), sophomore midfielder Max Rothenbucher (Berlin, Germany) and freshman midfielder Matt Taylor (Dublin, Ireland). Taylor has the overall lead in points with six on two goals and two assists.
If Quinnipiac wins its opening round game against Canisius, the quarterfinal game against Rider will be shown on ESPN3. For full details of the MAAC Tournament, click here for tournament home page.
