Lawrenceville, N.J. - The Rider men's soccer team break a scoreless tie with less than two minutes remaining in the first half and went on to take a 2-0 win over Quinnipiac in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Ben Cohen Field.
With the loss, the Bobcats (1-10-6, 1-5-4 MAAC) will be the No. 10 seed in next week's MAAC Tournament and will open up on Thursday against the No. 7 seed, which will be determined at the end of today's play. Rider improved to 11-5-1 and 6-3-1 in the MAAC with the win.
The first half was largely a defensive struggle, but Matt Crust was able to find the net with just 1:22 showing on the clock to give the Broncs the momentum going into halftime. Rider was able to remain tight defensively in the second half to limit the Quinnipiac chances, and then got an insurance goal to help secure the win from Florian Valot with 13:23 left in the game.
Rider finished with a 15-5 edge in shots on the day, including 10-3 after halftime, following a first half which saw the Broncs hold a more narrow 5-2 edge. Junior goalie Brian Westerman (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had two saves for the Bobcats in his first start of the season. Freshman midfielder Matt Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) had three of the five shots for the Bobcats, while junior forward Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, N.J. - pictured) had the other two. Ryan Baird had three saves for the shutout for the Broncs.
Quinnipiac will head to the MAAC Tournament looking for some renewed life after winning back-to-back regular season titles in 2013 and 2014. The Bobcats added a postseason title in 2013, winning both games on penalty kicks, and then fell in the semifinals on penalty kicks last year to Fairfield. Including 2012 in the Northeast Conference, the last four league tournament games the Bobcats have played in have all gone to penalties after ending as ties through 110 minutes.
