Loudonville, N.Y. - Freshman forward Matt Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) tied the score with just under 20 minutes remaining, but Siena bounced back to score the game-winner in the 84th minute as the Quinnipiac men's soccer team fell on the road to the Saints 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
The loss drops Quinnipiac to 1-4-4 in MAAC play this season, while Siena moves above .500 at 5-4. It was only the sixth conference loss in the last four years for the Bobcats, who were 8-1-1 in 2012 in the NEC and 7-1-2 and 7-0-3 in their first two seasons in the MAAC and now stand at 23-6-10 in league games since the start of 2012.
Siena struck first at the 18:02 mark of the first half, less than five minutes after freshman forward Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Conn.) hit the post for the Bobcats. The Saints got the ball down to the other end, and Chip Sherman was able to head the ball into the net in traffic to make the score 1-0.
The score remained stuck at 1-0 until the clock just passed the 20:00 mark in the second half, as Taylor finished a one-timer in the box to level the score at 1-1. Sophomore midfielder Max Rothenbucher and junior defender Liam O'Sullivan set the play up and earned assists as the Bobcats leveled things with 19:58 left to go.
The momentum didn't hold, though, as Siena got the lead back on a scramble in front of the Quinnipiac net. Junior goalie Brian Westerman (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) made an initial save on a shot from Junior Rosero, but Rosero was able to outfight the Bobcats for the rebound to slot home the eventual game-winner with just 6:31 left. Freshman midfielder Oscar Evans (Christchurch, New Zealand) had the last-ditch effort for Quinnipiac to tie, but his shot with just under three minutes left missed high.
Westerman had two saves in the second half in relief of starter Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ontario), who had one save in the first half. Gianni Carillo had one save for Siena, as Quinnipiac finished with a narrow 11-10 edge in shots. Dally had six shots for the Bobcats, including the one off the post in the first half.
Quinnipiac closes out its regular season with a road game against Rider on Saturday at 7 p.m. (note: the start time could be moved to 3 p.m. if Rider hosts a women's soccer playoff game on Saturday).
