HAMDEN, Connecticut - Nationally-ranked No. 14 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey scored five unanswered goals on its way to a 5-2 win against nationally-ranked No. 9 St. Cloud State in a non-conference match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 5-0-0 overall while the Huskies drop to 4-1-0 for the year. Quinnipiac is now 5-0-0 for the third time (1997-98, 1998-99) in program history and undefeated through its first five games for the fifth time (1995-96, 1997-98, 1998-99 and 2000-01).
Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) scored twice while Andrew Taverner (Edmonton, Alberta), Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia) and K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York) also scored for the Bobcats. Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) had two assists and Kevin McKernan (Millbury, Massachusetts) picked up his first assist of the year. Freshman stand-out Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) picked up an assist on Tiefenwerth's goal to give him a point in the first five games of his collegiate career while Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia) also picked up an assist on Tiefenwerth's goal.
Quinnipiac countered a two-goal St. Cloud State lead with four goals in the second period. It marked the first time since Jan. 17, 2014 in a 6-1 win against Merrimack that the Bobcats found the back of the net four times in one period.
The Bobcats' four-goal second period also ended an incredible scoreless streak for St. Cloud State goalie Charlie Lindgren, who entered Friday night's game with three shutouts in his first three games of the season for the longest scoreless streak to start a season in NCAA history (210:34). Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) extended his own scoreless streak to 157:52 before St. Cloud scored, giving him the second-longest streak in program history behind Jamie Holden's 171:19. Garteig stopped 32 of St. Cloud's 34 shots on goal to improve to 5-0-0 on the year.
St. Cloud's Judd Peterson scored the game's first two goals to give the Huskies a two-goal cushion. Peterson's first goal came after a St. Cloud penalty with Kalle Kossila and Nathan Widman assisting on his short-handed goal. Peterson pushed the Huskies lead to 2-0 when Jon Lizotte took a pass from Mika Ilvonen at the point and threw a shot on goal. Peterson poked his stick out and tipped the puck, re-directing it over Garteig's right shoulder.
Halfway through the period Taverner won a face-off to the left of St. Cloud goalie Charlie Lindgren back to Kevin McKernan. McKernan walked to the middle of the ice and wristed a shot that was knocked down in traffic before it was picked up by Taverner in the slot. Taverner blasted the puck from out in front of the Huskies' goal and snapped Lindgren's scoreless streak of 210-plus minutes.
Less than three minutes later, St. Denis scored his third of the year after he won a draw in the left face-off circle back to Anas. Anas gave it back to St. Denis along the boards, who stepped around a defender and dropped the puck back to Anas. Anas made a maneuver around a Bobcat defender and walked across the goal line before throwing a shot on goal. St. Denis picked up the rebound and went top-shelf on Lindgren to tie the game.
St. Denis potted his second goal of the game after taking a cross-ice pass from Anas and one-timed a shot past Lindgren. Forty seconds later, Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia) picked up a loose puck in the crease on a shot by Derek Smith from the point, reached around Lindgren and scored his first career goal to give Quinnipiac a two-goal lead, 4-2. With four minutes to play, Tiefenwerth scored for the second-consecutive game to push the Bobcats lead to 5-2.
Quinnipiac and St. Cloud State play the final game of their two-game set on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center.
