
Nicole Kosta Scores 100th Career Point in No. 8/7 QU Women’s Ice Hockey’s 5-1 Win Over Maine

ORONO, Maine – Quinnipiac women's ice hockey senior forward Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) netted a power play goal early in the first period to record her 100th career point in the nationally-ranked No. 8/7 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team's 5-1 win over Maine Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
Kosta became just the third player in program history to record her 100th career point, joining Kelly Babstock and Shiann Darkangelo who accomplished the feat in each of the past two seasons. Kosta scored a power play goal, her second goal of the season, in the first period for her 100th career point. She now has 31 career goals, good for seventh in program history while her 69 assists are second.
Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) led the Bobcats offensively with two goals and one assist for her first three-point game of the season and freshman Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) tallied three assists for her first career three-assist and three-point game. Cianfarano's three-point effort was the third of her career and her 12th career multi-point game.
Cianfarano has now recorded a point in each of the first four games this season on three goals and three assists, tied with Samoskevich for the most consecutive games with a point Samoskevich has now recorded one goal and five assists in four games to start her career.
Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) and Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) each scored a goal and recorded an assist in the win for the Bobcats. Woods tallied the 11th two-point game of her career with her third goal of the season and Connery put up her 15th career two-point game.
Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) added two assists for her third career two-assist game and sixth career two-point game in the victory. Defensive partner Taryn Baumgardt (Innisfail, Alberta) added her first assist of the season and 11th of her career.
Goaltender Sydney Rossman was solid between the pipes once again as she stopped 12 of the 13 shots she faced in the winning effort. Rossman extended her personal unbeaten streak to nine games to start her career with a 7-0-2 record.
For the second straight night, the Bobcats (3-0-1, 0-0-0 ECAC Hockey) tallied over 30 shots on goal, outshooting the Black Bears (1-3-0, 1-1-0 WHEA) 35-13, including another impressive first period shot total of 15-3. Quinnipiac also added their first two power play goals of the season, going 2 for 5 on the man advantage.
The Bobcats came out flying in the first period as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead 6:06 into the first period and never looked back. Quinnipiac was just beginning their power play after Emma Greco (Burlington, Ontario) returned to the ice after her penalty expired. Connery fired a shot on goal from just above the left circle where Treacy had trouble controlling the puck. Roesler and Woods converged on goal where Roesler collected the rebound and tapped it to Woods on the left side of the goal to bury the puck and put the Bobcats on top.
Just over a minute and a half later, Kosta tallied the 100th point of her career with her second goal of the season. With the Bobcats on their second power play of the first period, Roesler cycled the puck from the point to Cianfarano on the right wing. Cianfarano skated the puck down to the right corner where she handed the puck off to Samoskevich who circled around and fired a shot on Treacy. The rebound kicked off Treacy's pad where Kosta was wide open on the back door to bang home the rebound for the power play goal.
Cianfarano continued her torrid start to the season with a goal late in the second period to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. Woods skated the puck out from behind the Bobcats' goal and slid a pass into the neutral zone to Samoskevich. Samoskevich chipped the puck past a Black Bear defender and skated with speed onto the puck and into the neutral zone. She then deked a defender and skated around her to center a pass to Cianfarano wide open on the back door for the goal with 5:18 left in the period.
Connery answered with her first goal of the season just 26 seconds later to give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead. Roesler worked the puck across the blue line from right point to left point where Baumgardt awaited the pass. Baumgardt wristed a shot on goal which was redirected by Connery's blade past Treacy in goal for the Black Bears.
Maine got on the board with 12:37 remaining in the third period as Jillian Langtry skated into the offensive zone after getting a pass from Cassidy Herman up the right boards. Langtry shot the puck low past Rossman to break up the shutout.
Cianfarano added her second goal of the game with just 12 seconds remaining the game. Samoskevich received a pass on the right boards from Cianfarano who collected a loose puck in the offensive zone. Samoskevich then slid a pass into the high slot for Cianfarano where she rifled a shot past Treacy for her third point of the day and solidify the Bobcats' win.
The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 with an exhibition contest against the Western (Ontario) Mustangs at High Point Solutions Arena with puck drop set for 7 P.M. The Bobcats return to regular season action on Saturday, Oct. 24 when they host a non-conference matchup with the Yale Bulldogs at 4 P.M. at High Point Solutions Arena.
