HAMDEN, Connecticut – Nationally-ranked No. 15 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey scored four unanswered goals in a 4-3 ECAC Hockey victory against Union at High Point Solutions Arena. Quinnipiac has now won three straight games and are winners of six of their last eight games as their record improves to 15-6-1 overall and 10-2-0 in ECAC Hockey while Union goes to 11-8-2 overall and 4-5-1 in league play.
Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) scored twice to bring his season total to 11, while freshmen Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) and Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) also scored for Quinnipiac. Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) and Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) set-up St. Denis' first goal while Justin Agosta (East Meadow, New York) and Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) had assists on his second. Danny Federico (Acton, Massachusetts) and Brayden Sherbinin (Kelowna, British Columbia) also assisted on MacMaster's goal.
In goal, Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) stopped 19 of Union's 20 shots on goal to improve to 14-6-0 on the year.
St. Denis put the Bobcats first goal on the board 11 minutes into the game, finding the back of the net for the 10th time this season. St. Denis picked up a puck to the right of the Union goal, just below the goal line, skated behind Union goalie Colin Stevens to the opposite post and flipped one past the Dutchmen's netminder for the wrap-around goal. St. Denis goal came after Stevens denied him from close range on a one-timer from between the crease the face-off circle on the Bobcats power play moments before. Quinnipiac cycled the puck through Union's zone before sending it to St. Denis on the doorstep. His blast sent Stevens lunging across the crease before he managed to sneer it with his glove.
MacMaster scored his second goal of the year with less than five minutes to play in the second period when he cleaned up a rebound and popped the puck over Stevens to give Quinnipiac a two-goal lead. Connor Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) moved the puck from the right point to the left point to Danny Federico (Acton, Massachusetts). Federico wound-up and blasted a shot that beat Stevens, but rang off the cross bar and landed in the crease. MacMaster crashed through a crowd in front of Union's goal and managed to get his stick on the puck to convert on the goal and give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Early in the second period, Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) capitalized on an Union miscue and potted his third goal of the year. Quinnipiac sustained pressure in the Union zone before a Dutchmen defenseman turned the puck over in the slot. Pieper was waiting and one-timed the puck to the top-opposite corner to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead. Moments later, St. Denis took a pass from Justin Agosta (East Meadow, New York) in the slot and one-timed the puck past Stevens to give Quinnipiac a 4-0 lead.
With nine minutes to play in the game, Union's leading goal-scorer Daniel Ciampini found the back for the seventh straight game to end Quinnipiac's shutout bid. Ciampini won a battle behind the Bobcats net, faked to his right and then snuck around to the near-side and tucked the puck just inside the post to Garteig's left.
With three minutes to play, and skating with an extra player after pulling Stevens, Union added their second goal of the period when J.C. Brassad took a pass from Max Novak and one-timed a shot from the point that beat a screened Garteig to move the Dutchmen within two goals, 4-2, before Mike Vecchione scored with just over a minute to play to trip Quinnipiac's lead to 4-3.
Quinnipiac will face Merrimack for a non-conference, two-game series on Jan. 16-17. The Bobcats and Warriors will play in North Andover, Massachusetts on Friday night before returning home to High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center on Saturday night.
