SMITHFIELD, R.I. – It was a career day for several Bobcat competitors for the Quinnipiac men's cross country team at the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Race on Saturday afternoon hosted by Bryant University. The group of six Bobcats, all of which were making their 2014 season debuts, led the way for Quinnipiac who placed 6th in the team standings out of eight competitors. Northeastern claimed the team victory with 24 points while the Bobcats tallied 121 points on the afternoon.
"Our group really performed well today and we all think they'll continue to improve and use this as motivation throughout the remainder of the season," said assistant coach Chris Dickerson. "Brendan Copley had himself a nice day placing 4th, Thomas Dextradeur performed well in his first race in over a year and we're really excited about what's next for this team at the Monmouth Invitational."
Racing in his third career Nassaney Memorial Race, junior Brendan Copley (Colchester, Vt.) tied his career best finish at the meet with a 4th place showing on Saturday. This meet marked Copley's fifth career Top 5 finish and ninth straight meet finishing as the fastest Bobcat runner. He earned the 4th place result crossing the finish line in 15:45.5.
In what will not come as a surprise to many Bobcat fans, senior Spencer Mannion (Brookfield, Conn.) finished as the second fastest Bobcat with a 19th place finish in the competition. A year after teaming up with Copley to place as the top two Bobcats in seven-of-eight meets, the dynamic duo combined once again for a strong pairing at the top of the leaderboard. Spencer clocked in at 16:29.3 to earn the 19th place result on Saturday.
Sophomore Dylan Fearon (Tenafly, N.J.) jumpstarted his 2014 campaign placing as the third fastest Bobcat in 21st place overall. A year after finishing as the fourth fastest Bobcat in five different meets, Fearon busted through with a new career best with a finishing time of 16:34.4.
Competing in his first race since Aug. 31, 2013 after missing most of last season due to injury, senior Thomas Dextradeur (Branford, Conn.) showed well with a 36th place finish. The Bobcats' senior leader held his own amongst a crowded field to cross the line in 17:00.8.
Rounding out the group for the Bobcats was a pair of freshmen in Thomas Mannion (Brookfield, Conn.) and Kaelan Hayes (Meriden, Conn.). Two local Conn.-born Bobcats put together strong outings in their first career appearance in the blue and gold as they placed 41st and 47th overall, respectively. Tyler finished the event in 17:15.1 while Hayes crossed the line in 17:30.1.
Quinnipiac will now take a week off to recuperate and prepare for the Monmouth Invitational from Holmdel Park on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10:00 am. The meet will be an important one for the Bobcats as Holmdel Park is the site of the 2014 MAAC Championship on Oct. 31.
