HOLMDEL, N.J. – The Quinnipiac men's cross country team wrapped up a solid showing at the Monmouth Invitational on Saturday with a 5th place finish out of eight teams. Four Bobcats placed within the Top 30 overall, led by junior Matt Mensher (Tolland, Conn.), as Quinnipiac compiled 106 points on the day. Monmouth picked up the team victory, racing from their home course at Holmdel Park, with 28 points overall.
"The men ran well especially considering we didn't have all our guys competing today," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "They're working really hard so they used this meet to get a chance to preview the course and what we're going to be expecting for the end of the season. It was nice to get a preview and we'll continue to work on getting better in anticipation of the MAAC Championships."
A key meet in the 2014 season for the Bobcats, this was the first chance for the Quinnipiac runners to see and race at the site of the MAAC Championships. Just a little over a month away, the Bobcats will look to make some improvements as the same course at Holmdel Park will be used to decide the conference champion on Oct. 31.

Mensher continues to excel this season as he finished as the fastest Bobcat in his second straight appearance to open the season. Having already bested his previous career high at the Stony Brook Invitational on Aug. 31, Mensher added to his arsenal with a 13th place finish on Saturday. Coming into this season placing no higher than third place among Bobcat runners, Mensher has now placed first in two straight meets to open his season. Mensher clocked in on Saturday at 27:06.4.
Not far behind Mensher was the Bobcats' rookie Drew Reda (Holmdel, N.J.) who finished with a 15th place result. Racing before his hometown faithful, on a course in which he is all too familiar, Reda put together another successful meet to open his 2014 season as he has now placed second on the team in two straight appearances. Reda's time of 27:08.7 was just a couple seconds behind Mensher while he also finished as the third-fastest freshmen in competition on Saturday.
The string of Bobcats continued with senior Spencer Mannion (Brookfield, Conn.) as the veteran runner placed 19th overall to give Quinnipiac three runners placing between 13th-19th overall. Mannion continued his strong start to the year as he crossed the finish line in 27:20.3. Mannion has now finished second and third on the team in consecutive meets as the lone Bobcat senior looks to make his final season a successful one within the program.
Rounding out the top five runners for Quinnipiac was sophomore Dylan Fearon (Tenafly, N.J.) and senior Thomas Dextradeur (Branford, Conn.). A week after placing third-fastest on the team, Fearon continued his strong start to 2014 with a 30th place finish overall, clocking in at 27:34.5. Also showing well in a crowded field of 156 runners was Dextradeur as he finished in 47th place overall with a time of 28:01.4.
The Bobcats will have a quick turnover as they next travel down to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 4.
