PRINCETON, New Jersey – Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) tied the Bobcats' career shutout record, previously set by former All-American Eric Hartzell, with the 10th scoreless performance of his career in 1-0 win at Princeton. With the win, nationally-ranked No. 14 Quinnipiac improves to 12-5-1 overall and 8-2-0 in ECAC Hockey, while the Tigers drop to 2-12-1 overall and 1-9-0 in league play.
Garteig, who stopped 21 shots on Sunday to go with a 19-save performance against Princeton on Saturday, previously broke Hartzell's single-season shutout record when he posted six shutouts in 2013-14. This season, the junior goalie now has two scoreless ECAC Hockey weekends to his credit after blanking Colgate and Cornell on Nov. 7-8. Through Sunday's game, Garteig's scoreless streak now stands at 121:23 as his last goal allowed came late in a 5-2 loss to Harvard on Dec. 6.
For Quinnipiac, they have now held Princeton scoreless in four of their last five games, including the last three meetings at Hobey Baker Rink. The Bobcats have not allowed a goal to Princeton at the Tigers home rink since Nov. 1, 2011, a span lasting over 186 minutes.
Both teams were scoreless through the first two periods, with Quinnipiac holding a slight advantage in shots over the first two frames. To start the third, both teams were assessed penalties, with Mike Ambrosia initially whistled for a five-minute major for interference, before a scrum in front of the Quinnipiac bench resulted in a minor penalty on Quinnipiac's Danny Federico (Acton, Massachusetts) as well. After the Bobcats killed off Federico's penalty, they still had three minutes left on Ambrosia's major.
The Bobcats capitalized, converting just 23 seconds into the power play. Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) carried the puck deep into the corner where he was buried by two Princeton players, which triggered a referee to signal for a delayed penalty. Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) picked up the loose puck and fed Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) in the slot. Peca stepped across the front of the goal before back-handing the puck over to Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) for the one-timer.
For Toews, he now has six points in his last five games on the strength of a goal and five assists. For Peca, he converts on his 12th assist of the year and the 84th of his career. Smith picks up his 11th assist of the season and now stands at 18 points in 18 games.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it travels to St. Cloud, Minnesota to take on the Huskies in a two-game series on Jan. 2-3, 2015 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Friday's game is set for a 7:37 EST start while Saturday's match-up will begin at 7:07 EST.
