HAMDEN, Conn. - The nationally-ranked No. 14 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team defeated Princeton, 2-0, in front of 3,214 at High Point Solutions Arena in Hamden, Conn. The win - Quinnipiac's third in its last four games - pushes the Bobcats to 11-5-1 overall and 7-2-0 in ECAC Hockey while Princeton drops to 2-11-1 on the year with a 1-8-0 mark in league play.
Including Saturday's 2-0 win, Quinnipiac has now held Princeton scoreless in three of its last four match-ups against the Tigers. Senior co-captain Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) and freshman Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) scored for Quinnipiac, with each player's goals representing their second of the season, respectively. Pieper now has a three-game point streak, while Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) has five asissts in his last four games after setting up Peiper's tally.
In goal, Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) stopped everything that Princeton threw at him over 60 minutes for his third shutout of the season and ninth of his career. Garteig's last shutout came on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014 in a 1-0 win against Cornell. Garteig stopped all 19 of Princeton's shots-on-goal to improve to 10-5-0 on the year.
Peca's second goal of the year came just under five minutes to play in the first period to give Quinnipiac a one-goal lead. Freshman Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) carried the puck into Princeton's defensive zone and ripped a pass across the ice, intended for Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California). The puck bounced behind Jonzzon who turned, found the rubber and one-timed the puck on goal. It found Peca's tape before being deposited in the Tiger's goal to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Halfway through the second period, Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) scored his second career goal to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) held the puck between the face-off circle to the right of Princeton goalie Colton Phinney before zipping the puck across the ice to Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia). Toews eyed Pieper slipping behind the Tigers' defense, along the goal line, and slapped a pass from the point to the far post for Pieper. Pieper bounced the puck off the right leg of Phinney and into Princeton's goal to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead.
Quinnipiac and Princeton resume their ECAC Hockey weekend series on Sunday, Dec. 28 when the Bobcats travel to historic Hobey Baker Rink for a midday match-up that can been on ESPNU at 4 p.m.
