HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team upset national-ranked No. 4 Colgate, 5-0, in the Bobcats' ECAC Hockey opener in front of a sell-out crowd of 3,347 at High Point Solutions Arena in Hamden, Conn. With its third consecutive victory, Quinnipiac opens league play at 1-0-0 while improving to 4-2-1 on the year. Colgate drops to 6-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in league play.
Sam Anas (Petawawa, Ontario) scored twice and assisted on another goal, while K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York) picked up his two first career Quinnipiac points with a pair of assists. Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California), Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) and Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) all scored for Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) outdueled his counterpart, Colgate Charlie Finn – the reigning ECAC Hockey and HCA National Goalie of the Month. Garteig blanked Colgate for his seventh career shutout after stopping all 19 of Colgate's shots on goal.
Anas' first goal came less than three minutes into the game off a rebound. K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York) started the play when he skated into Colgate's defensive zone and sent the puck into the corner, where it wrapped around and was stopped behind the Raiders goal by Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey). Clifton peaked out from behind Colgate's Charlie Finn on the goalies right and bounced the puck off his pad. Anas was waiting just above crease where he picked up the puck and deposited his fifth goal of the season.
Two minutes later, Anas scored Quinnipiac's 10th power play goal of the year, while also giving the second-year Bobcat his NCAA-leading fourth power play goal of the year. Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) held the puck along the boards before passing to Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) in the corner. Peca then centered a pass to Anas above the face-off circles, giving Anas a lane to walk into before wristing a shot over Finn's left shoulder.
With more than half the second period gone, Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) scored in his second consecutive game to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead. Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) carried the puck up the ice and handed a pass back to Justin Agosta (East Meadow, New York) at the point. Agosta handed the puck to Jonzzon who tip-toed around one defender and dangled another before scoring, five-hole, on Finn to hand the Bobcats a three-goal lead.
Five minutes into the third period, Anas picked up a loose pick in the neutral zone and spied Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) taking off down ice. Anas snapped a pass onto Smith's stick, who split two defensemen and buried a breakaway lamp-lighter to increase the Bobcats lead to 4-0. Less than a minute later, Tim Clifton scored his first goal of the season off a pass by Tiefenwerth that ended Colgate goalie Charlie Finn's night.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 8 when it hosts Cornell for an ECAC Hockey match-up at 7 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena.
