HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac men's ice hockey sophomore Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) scored the game-winner with less than two minutes to play to give the Bobcats a dramatic 1-0 victory against Cornell in an ECAC Hockey match-up at High Point Solutions Arena in Hamden, Conn.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 2-0-0 in ECAC Hockey while its fourth consecutive victory puts them at 5-2-1 overall. Bobcats goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) stopped everything Cornell threw at him for his second consecutive shutout and the eighth of his career. Garteig's current shutout streak stands at 149 minutes - the fourth longest in program history.
With time ticking away in a scoreless game, Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) won a battle in the corner to the right of Cornell's Mitch Gillam and tipped the puck to Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California). Jonzzon dove towards the Cornell goal and fired a shot on Gillam that trickled out just above the crease. Clifton, from his knees, jabbed at the puck and snuck it under Gillam to give the Bobcats the late lead.
Clifton's game-winner gave him his second goal of the weekend after scoring the night before in the 5-0 win over Colgate. Jonzzon also tallied a point for the second consecutive night with his assist on the game-winner. The Bobcats outshot Cornell, 40-18, as they bombarded Cornell goalie Mitch Gillam with 19 shots-on-goal in the third period. Cornell's Gillam stopped 39 of Quinnipiac's 40 shots on goal.
Quinnipiac will hit the road for a four-game road trip when it plays at Union and Rensselaer on Nov. 14-15 before heading to the North Country to take on Clarkson and St. Lawrence on Nov. 21-22, respectively. The Bobcats return home after Thanksgiving when they host Massachusetts on Nov. 28 before facing the Minutemen in Amherst, Massachusetts on Nov. 29.
