UMass Lowell used a Chris Maniccia goal with less than five minutes into the game to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Jake Suter fed Robert Francis, who attempted to wrap it around the boards. After Maniccia got tied up in the corner with a Quinnipiac defenseman, he was able to break free and skate into the face-off circle to Garteig's left where he fired a shot just over the Bobcats' goalies' shoulder to give the River Hawks the one-goal lead after the first period.
Less than five minutes into the second period, UMass Lowell's Michael Kapla picked up a rebound off a blocked shot in front the Quinnipiac goal and roofed a shot from the slot to give the River Hawks a 2-0 lead. C. J. Smith and Joe Gambardella were credited with assists on the play.
Quinnipiac got on the board halfway through the second period when Anas scored his team-leading third goal of the season on a 4-on-3 power play. Quinnipiac's Connor Clifton was called for a cross check, while Maniccia was called for embellishment, putting both teams at 4-on-4. Seconds later it was Lowell's Dylan Zink called for interference to give Quinnipiac the man-advantage.
The Bobcats worked the puck around the River Hawks' zone before with Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) zipped a pass across the UMass Lowell zone to Peca. Peca's one-timer was kicked to the right of River Hawks' goalie Kevin Boyle where Anas was waiting to collect the rebound and deposit the Bobcats' first goal.
Anas' goal was the 25th of his career, in his 42nd career game, to make him the second faster player to reach the mark in Quinnipiac's Division I history. Brandon Wong reached the 25-goal mark in 35 games as a freshman in 2005-06.
Early in the third period, it was UMass Lowell's C.J. Smith with a one-timer off a pass from Evan Campbell to increase the River Hawks' lead back to two goals. Campbell carried the puck behind the Bobcats net and flipped a pass to Smith in the slot for the one-timer as UMass Lowell jumped out to a 3-1 lead with just under 18 minutes to play in the final frame. Moments later UML's Jake Suter carried a Quinnipiac defender across the crease and flipped a shot on goal that Garteig knocked down in front of him. Robert Francis slid across the crease and poked the poke over Garteig to increase the River Hawks lead to 4-1.
With just under nine minutes to play, a turnover in the neutral zone resulted in an odd-man rush that saw freshman Canon Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) back-hand a pass to his right where Agosta collected the puck and fired on Boyle. The puck caromed off of Boyles left leg pad an into the River Hawks goal to trim Quinnipiac deficit by two goals, 4-2, with less than half the final frame to play.
With 6:34 remaining, Joe Gambardella scored to put UMass Lowell's lead back to three goals, 5-2. Smith and Suter were credited with assists on the play.
Two minutes later, Agosta carried the puck down the boards into the UMass Lowell zone before centering a pass to Peca. Peca then wired a cross-ice pass to the opposite post, leading Quinnipiac freshman Andrew Taverner (Edmonton, Alberta) who went bar-down on Boyle for his first career goal as Quinnipiac moved within two goals, 5-3, with just under five minutes to play. After Quinnipiac went on the power play, and pulled Garteig to go 6-on-4, Lowell's Michael Colatone fired from center ice to score the short-handed, empty-net goal as UMass Lowell took a 6-3 lead in the closing minutes.
