Quinnipiac Falls to Maine on Sunday

Hamden, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team was defeated by the Maine Black Bears, 63-55, on Sunday, December 14th, in Hamden.
Ella Ryan led the way in scoring for the Bobcats, scoring 17 points on 70% (7-for-10) shooting from the floor and 3-for-4 (75%) from three-point range. Ella O'Donnell reached double figures, scoring eleven points in the loss. Sydney Ryan and Anna Foley led the team with eight rebounds each. Ella O'Donnell and Paige Girardi dished out a team-high four assists.

Ella Ryan got the scoring started with a three just eight seconds into the contest, and the Bobcats held a 9-7 advantage halfway through the opening quarter. Out of the media timeout, the Black Bears closed out the opening ten minutes on a 6-1 scoring run as they led the Bobcats 13-10 after one quarter.
The Maine lead increased to five to start the second quarter before Quinnipiac responded with six straight points to force Maine to call a timeout. Another scoring run from the Bobcats out of the break pushed their lead to 25-17 as Maine called their second timeout of the quarter. Maine responded and cut the Bobcats' lead down to seven entering the locker room at the half.
Maine opened the third quarter with an 8-4 run to make it a three-point game with 6:30 to play in the third quarter. After Quinnipiac called a timeout, the Bobcats went on a 6-2 run to make it a seven-point game, 40-33. After the media timeout, it was Maine's turn to go on a run as they closed the gap even more, making it a one-possession game, 45-43, heading into the final frame.
Quinnipiac and Maine traded shots for much of the final frame as the two teams were knotted up at 55 with 1:18 to play. The Black Bears took the two-point lead with 49 seconds to play and didn't look back as they held on to defeat the Bobcats for the first time in program history.
