NEWARK, Delaware – The Quinnipiac baseball team split the doubleheader with the Delaware Blue Hens on Friday, March 8 in Newark, Delaware.

The Bobcats will go to 4-7 to start the 2024 season, while Delaware will go to 7-6 on the campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One (Quinnipiac 6, Delaware 2)
Quinnipiac got the scoring started in game one when Dominick Proctor dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score Christian Smith in the top of the second inning.

The Blue Hens got a run back on a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to even the game at one. In Quinnipiac's next turn at bat, they were able to put a couple balls over the wall to regain the lead. Keegan O'Connor gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead with a homer to left field and CJ Willis doubled the lead with a blast to dead center field.

Delaware made it a 3-2 game with a run of their own in the bottom of the third inning off an RBI ground out.

With the Bobcats holding on to a one-run lead heading into the sixth inning, the bats got hot to give them some insurance. Sean Swenson started the scoring in the inning with a solo home run, his second of the season.

O'Connor followed up with an RBI single and CJ Willis would score on a wild pitch to make it a 6-2 lead for Quinnipiac.

Sam Favieri would shut down the Blue Hens in relief to seal the 6-2 win in seven innings.

Game Two (Delaware 11, Quinnipiac 2)
After five scoreless innings for both teams, CJ Willis got Quinnipiac's first base hit and singled home Kyle Garbowski to take a 1-0 lead.

After Delaware got two runners on from walks, a single up the middle scored the runner from second to tie the game at one. With the bases loaded and two outs, Delaware was able to dunk a hit into center field to score two runs and give them a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Delaware was able to load the bases before Joey Loynd launched a grand slam into left center field to give Delaware a 7-1 lead. The Blue Hens scored three more runs in the inning from two singles.

Jared Zimbardo launched his first home run of the season as he cut the Delaware lead to 10-2 in the top of the eighth inning.

Delaware added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning off an RBI Sac fly to extend the lead by to nine.

Seven different Bobcats recorded hits on the day against the Blue Hens.
Keegan O'Connor went 2-for-3 in game one, driving in two runs and hitting a solo home run.
CJ Willis went 3-for-4 in game one and 1-for-3 in game two, while driving in two runs on the day and blasting a solo homer.
Sean Swenson hit his second home run of the season with his sixth inning home run.
Dominick Proctor picked up two hits in the first of two games and drove in a run in the win.
Sam Favieri came in relief and picked up the win. Favier went 5.0 innings and struck out four while only allowing one run.
Kyle Garbowski, Christian Smith, and Matt DeRosa picked up a hit each in game one.
Jack Kabel got the start in game two and went 5.0 innings and struck out nine batters, while allowing just one hit.
Jared Zimbardo hit his first homer of the season with his eighth inning home run in game two.
