HOW IT HAPPENED
Quinnipiac got the scoring started in the series opener, striking for two runs in the opening inning. Christian Smith got the scoring started with an RBI double to left field, scoring Kyle Garbowski. Alex Irizarry stepped in as the next batter and immediately doubled the lead as he singled home Smith to make it 2-0 Bobcats. Merrimack got a run back in the bottom half of the first inning as Brooks Craigue hit a solo home run to left-center field.
The game remained 2-1 until the Bobcats came back up to bat in the fourth inning. With two runners on, Chase Camac singled to third base, scoring Jack Balcer to make it a 3-1 lead for QU. Later in the inning, James Marino came in to score on a Cole Constable groundout to give the Bobcats a three-run lead. Peyton Vancas later singled through the left side to bring home Camac to make it a 5-1 game. Merrimack responded in the bottom half of the inning as Jayden Hamilton launched a three-run home run to make it a one-run game.
Merrimack kept the Bobcats off the board in the top half of the fifth inning and put up a seven-spot in the home half of the inning to make it an 11-5 lead in their favor.
This time it was Quinnipiac with a quick response as Cole Constable hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning to make it a two-run game.
The Warriors got an insurance run in their half of the eighth inning as Brooks Craigue hit his second home run of the contest.
In the top of the ninth inning and QU's season in the balance, Christian Smith launched a two-run home run with zero outs in the inning. Merrimack got the next three outs without allowing another run as they held on for the 12-11 victory, clinching a spot in the MAAC Championships.
