Dominant Defense Powers Bobcats to Game 1 Victory

HAMDEN, Conn. — Five shots on goal.
That's all the Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team allowed, as the top-seeded Bobcats knocked off the No. 10 seed Yale 3-0 in Game 1 of its Best-of-3 ECAC Quarterfinal series at M&T Bank Arena.
The Bobcats' lockdown defense allowed two shots in each of the first two periods and then just one in the final 20 minutes of play, as Yaniv Perets recorded his 20th career shutout, besting Michael Garteig's career record of 19 in the program's Division I history.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Jacob Quillan forced home a shot in front, after Collin Graf shoveled the puck free from the outstretched arm of Luke Pearson, giving the Bobcats the early advantage.
Iivari Räsänen, making his 100th career appearance tonight, joined the scoring later in the period, firing a shot from the point that deflected off a Yale defender and into the top corner to give his squad insurance.
The Bobcats would add a third, as Zach Metsa batted a puck from the point that drifted up and over Pearson's blocker side to finish the scoring.
Sophomore Collin Graf added a trio of assists tonight, crossing the 50-point plateau and becoming the first Bobcat since Sam Anas in the 2015-16 campaign to hit that mark.
STATS AND NOTES
The Bobcats have a chance to close out their Whitney Ave., rivals on Saturday night as Game 2 of the series is set for 7 p.m., The game can be seen live on ESPN+.

STATS AND NOTES
- Graf's 52 points ties Chris Cerrella's total from the 1999-2000 campaign as he chases down Bryan Leitch's Division I program record of 59. He also passed Reid Cashman for the second-most assists by a sophomore in the Division I era with 33 on the year.
- Perets now stands alone atop the ECAC all-time and Quinnipiac Division I leaderboards with his 20th career shutout in just his 68th career game. He passed Michael Garteig's career record and is now one of six NCAA goalies with 20 or more career shutouts.
- The five shots allowed are tied for the least by any Division I program since at least the 2002-03 season. Lake Superior State had five against Minnesota State on Nov. 27, 2021.
- Räsänen scored his third career goal in a career-best offensive season, totaling 15 points now on the year. He had 13 in his previous two seasons combined.
- Quinnipiac is now 14-0-1 at home this season, winning 14 consecutive games at M&T Bank Arena. They are 31-2-2 in the building since last season.
- Quillan now has goals in back to back contests and has extended his point streak to four games. He has six during that stretch.
- Ethan de Jong has recorded a point in three of his last four games, totaling five over that stretch.
