PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Quinnipiac baseball team fell short in its doubleheader on the opening day of the 2023 campaign, falling in game one against Iowa, 7-1, before dropping game two, 6-1, against Indiana State on Saturday afternoon at Centennial Park.
GAME ONE: Iowa 7, QU 1
After two scoreless innings, the Hawkeyes struck first for three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead over the Bobcats. Iowa followed with four more runs in the fifth to increase its lead to 7-0.
The Bobcats struck back for a run in the top of the seventh to trim the deficit to 7-1. With one out in the inning, Jared Zimbardo lined a double down the right field line, then moved to third off a single from Anthony Donofrio. Keegan O'Connor followed with a sac-fly to score Zimbardo from third.
The deficit proved too much to overcome, as Iowa held on for the 7-1 victory.
GAME TWO: Indiana State 6, QU 1
The two sides remained scoreless through the first four innings of play before Indiana State struck for a run in the bottom of the fifth and five in the seventh to take a 6-0 lead over Quinnipiac.
The Bobcats attempted to mount a comeback in the ninth, starting with Kyle Maves' leadoff triple. After Zimbardo drew a walk, Donofrio advanced both runners on a sac-fly to cut the deficit to 6-1.
The deficit proved to be too much for the Bobcats as they ultimately fell short, 6-1.
