Quinnipiac Nearly Erases 4-0 Deficit, Season Ends in Allentown
ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Three different Quinnipiac players scored in a seven-minute span in the third period to cut into a once four-goal Michigan lead, but the Bobcats could not complete the comeback, falling 7-4 to the top-seeded Wolverines in Sunday's NCAA Regional Final. The Wolverines advance to the 2022 Frozen Four while Quinnipiac's season comes to an end.
After scoring less than one minute into the game, Michigan was able to push its lead all the way to 4-0 after the second period concluded. It was the start of the third period that saw the Bobcats mount a furious comeback.
Jayden Lee scored his third goal in three games less than five minutes into the frame to put the Bobcats on the board. The captain, Wyatt Bongiovanni, then took a feed from Ethan de Jong and chopped into the lead again with 10:59 left in regulation.
Two minutes after the Bongiovanni goal, Jacob Quillan and Ty Smilanic each won a puck battle below the goal line and eventually the puck found Desi Burgart who shoveled home Quinnipiac's third goal of the period with still nine minutes to play.
Still pushing for an equalizer, the Bobcats pulled the goalie for the extra attacker, but Michigan scored twice with the goalie pulled to ice the game.
The teams would also trade a goal apiece in the final minute of play, leading to the 7-4 final score.
