Fourth Quarter Slump Pushes URI Past Bobcats, 63-55

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team (5-4) wrapped up non-conference play, falling short at home against URI (9-1), 63-55, Sunday afternoon inside of M&T Bank Arena.
Mikala Morris led the Bobcats with 15 points and seven rebounds in the loss, while Jackie Grisdale added 14 points of her own.
The two sides were even through the first 7:30 of the contest, playing to a 14-14 tie. However, the Bobcats held the Rams scoreless over the final 2:30 of the first quarter, taking an 18-14 lead into the second behind five points from Jackie Grisdale.
With the Bobcats leading 20-14 in the second, the Rams went on a swift 7-0 run to push ahead 21-20 to force a Quinnipiac timeout with 8:28 left in the first half. However, Quinnipiac responded with a 9-4 run to take a 29-25 lead with 2:35 left in the frame. The Rams didn't waver, holding the Bobcats scoreless the rest of the half, tying the game at 29-29 entering the break.
After falling behind 33-29 to open the quarter, the Bobcats responded with a swift 6-0 run, capped by a three-pointer in the near corner from Grisdale entering the under five-minute media timeout with a 35-33 lead.
After Quinnipiac pushed its lead to 39-34 with 3:00 left in the third quarter URI went on an 8-0 run to take a 42-39 lead before Cur'Tiera Haywood nailed a three-pointer with seven seconds left in the frame to knot the contest at 42-42 entering the fourth.
Tied at 50-50 with less than four minutes remaining, Ella O'Donnell found a cutting Grisdale for a layup plus the foul for the old-fashioned play to give the Bobcats a three-point lead.
However, the Rams held Quinnipiac to two points during the remainder of the fourth, holding on for the 63-55 victory.
