Bobcats Drop MAAC-Opener at Iona, 57-54

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team could not withstand an Iona comeback, falling short in the MAAC-opener, 57-54, Saturday afternoon inside of the Hynes Athletic Center.
With the loss, the Bobcats fell to 5-5 overall on the season and 0-1 in the MAAC, while Iona improved to 6-4 and 1-0 in conference play. Cur'Tiera Haywood led the Bobcats with 14 points in the victory, while Jackie Grisdale added 10 points of her own.
The Bobcats used the opening 4:47 of the contest to jump out to an 8-4 lead behind two three-pointers from Grisdale. The Gaels responded with a 7-2 run of their own to take an 11-10 lead with 1:29 left in the frame, however, the Bobcats closed the quarter with four straight points, capped by a steal and bucket by Makenzie Helms at the buzzer to give Quinnipiac a 14-11 lead at quarter's end.
The Bobcats maintained momentum into the second quarter, using the opening 5:21 of the frame to go on an 8-3 run to push its lead to 30-16. Iona didn't waver, closing the half with a 6-0 run to cut its deficit to 30-22 entering the break.
After Iona cut the Quinnipiac lead to 30-24, the Bobcats responded with a 12-6 run, capped by a layup from Grisdale on the break to extend the lead to 42-30.
The Gaels responded with a swift 6-0 run of their own to trim the Bobcats' lead to 42-36 with 2:26 left in the third quarter. However, Quinnipiac outscored Iona 5-2 the rest of the frame to carry nine-point lead into the fourth.
After the Bobcats pushed its lead to 50-39 in the fourth, the Gaels countered with a 9-2 run behind three straight three-pointers to cut Quinnipiac's lead to 52-48, forcing a timeout by the Bobcats with 4:34 remaining in regulation.
Despite Quinnipiac pushing its lead to 54-48 with 3:11 left in regulation, Iona held the Bobcats scoreless the remainder of the frame, going on a 9-0 run to hold on for the 57-54 victory.
