Friedmann Ties Game in Third, Cornell Wins in Final Minute of OT
ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior TJ Friedmann scored five minutes into the third period to tie the game, but #8 Cornell responded with 16 seconds left in overtime to knock off #1 Quinnipiac on Saturday night in Ithaca. The loss drops the Bobcats to 18-2-3 and 9-1-1 in ECAC Hockey play and ends a 17-game unbeaten streak.
After a scoreless first period, Cornell converted a power play opportunity and took a 1-0 lead into the final 20 minutes. Less than six minutes into the final frame, Friedmann posted up in front of the Cornell goal and deflected a Jayden Lee point shot past Cornell goalkeeper Ian Shane to tie the game.
Both teams had multiple opportunities in the overtime period, including a point-blank chance for Cornell on a rebound at the side of the goal. Senior Wyatt Bongiovanni dove and slashed a Cornell stick to prevent a goal and was penalized for the infraction. The Big Red scored the game winner on the ensuing power play to hand Quinnipiac its first ECAC Hockey loss of the season.
