Smilanic Invited to USA Hockey's World Junior Summer Showcase

Men's Ice Hockey Rising Sophomore One of 44 Players Invited by USA Hockey
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey rising sophomore Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colorado) has been invited to USA Hockey's World Junior Summer Showcase, as announced by USA Hockey on Monday, June 28.
A 2020 NHL Draft third round selection of the Florida Panthers, Smilanic is one of 44 players invited by USA Hockey to the World Junior Summer Showcase. Among the 44 invitees, Smilanic is one of 17 that played college hockey in the 2020-21 season.
The Showcase, which will also include teams from Finland and Sweden, will serve as an evaluation for athletes seeking to make their respective national teams for the 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2021, through Jan. 5, 2022 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.
The Showcase will include 11 games across eight days and a complete schedule and ticket information is available at USAHockeyArena.com. All session passes are available for $40 by calling the USA Hockey Arena box office, or for more information call 734-453-6400 x396. Team USA players will be split into two squads for the event and compete against squads from Finland and Sweden.
Smilanic is the first Quinnipiac men's ice hockey player invited to the World Junior Summer Showcase since Peter DiLiberatore '22 earned the invite from Hockey Canada in August 2019.
If selected for the team, DiLiberatore would be the second Bobcat to compete at World Juniors after Karlis Cukste (Riga, Latvia) suited up for Latvia at the 2017 World Junior Championships during his rookie season. Brandon Fortunato '19 (North Hills, New York) also competed at the World Junior Championships for the United States in 2016 before transferring to Quinnipiac from Boston University.
Smilanic had a stellar first season as a Bobcat in 2020-21 as he was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team and earned the program's Rookie of the Year honors.
He was tied for 11th in the nation with 14 goals as a first year for the Bobcats and tied for eighth nationally with six power play goals. Among first years in the nation, Smilanic had the most goals in the nation and was third in power-play tallies. He also tied for eighth with 21 points.
Within ECAC Hockey, Smilanic led the league in goals, points, power-play goals, power-play assists (4), power-play points (10), game-winning goals (4), shots on goal (76) and shots on goal per game (2.62).
