Bobcats Drop Doubleheader with Monmouth Sunday

Correira Provides Impressive Start in Game One, Pair of Bobcats Go Deep in Game Two
HAMDEN, Conn. – Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire) reached base five times and blasted his second home run of the season Sunday afternoon but the Quinnipiac baseball team dropped a doubleheader with the Monmouth Hawks, 5-3 and 11-7, at the Quinnipiac baseball field.
Vulgamore recorded his second two-hit game in the first game of the doubleheader before drawing two hit by pitches in game two and launching a home run over the left field fence.
Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) went 3 for 5 in game two of the doubleheader with a two-run home run for his first round tripper of the season but it was not enough to complete the Bobcats' late inning comeback bid.
Arthur Correira (Rehoboth, Massachusetts) was dealing in game one for the Bobcats after making his first start of the season. He opened the game by striking out the side before finishing with nine strikeouts, and scattered two runs (one earned) on eight hits over six innings of work.
Correira picked up the no decision after his work as Monmouth scored three times in the top seventh inning to complete a 5-3 victory.
Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) had a pair of hits, including an RBI single, while Ian Ostberg (Northampton, Massachusetts) also had an RBI single in game one of the doubleheader while Dylan Lutz (Denver, Colorado) chipped in two RBIs in game two.

THIRD INNING
- Kyle Maves (Burlington, Ontario) lifted the ball to left centerfield where he dropped in for a double for the Bobcats' second baseman.
- Ostberg singled to center to score Maves from second base, and Ostberg managed to advance to second base as the first baseman had an errant cutout off throw to the plate.
- Marrero followed with a single up the middle that scored Ostberg and take a 2-1 lead over the Hawks.
- Vulgamore led off the inning with an 0-1 single through the left side before moving up to third on a Lutz single up the middle that was fumbled by Monmouth's centerfielder.
- Michael Kohn (Rockville, Maryland) lifted a fly ball to left field that scored a hustling Vulgamore from third base and make it a 3-1 lead.

FOURTH INNING
- Marrero led off the inning with a six-pitch walk to put a runner on base, and moved up to third as Bender ripped a double to right field.
- Marrero came home to score on the next played as Sam LaChance (Dover, New Hampshire) reached on a fielding error by Monmouth's shortstop
- With runners on the corners, Vulgamore was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
- Lutz pulled a single through the right side of the infield to score LaChance and Bender, and pull the Bobcats back within three at 6-3.
- After a pitching change, Vulgamore scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4 and Lutz moved into scoring position, but was stranded on base later to end the inning.
- Vulgamore led off the inning with a first pitch solo home run to cut the deficit against the Hawks to five.
- Ostberg singled to right field on a 2-0 count to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning as the Bobcats looked to comeback from a six-run deficit.
- With one out in the inning, Bender launched a first-pitch blast over the left field wall to cut the Monmouth lead to 11-7
- Vulgamore went 3 for 6 combined in the doubleheader and reached base five teams
- He also scored three runs for the Bobcats, and launched his second home run of the season and 25th of his career to move into sole possession of eighth in program history and fourth in Division I program history
- Vulgamore has a .500/.600/1.167 slash line through the first four games of the season
- Correira made one of the best starts of his collegiate career as he struck out nine batters over six innings, and scattered eight hits with two runs allowed to earn the no decision in game one.
- Bender went 3 for 5 in game two with a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, good for the fifth home run of his career
- Marrero had three hits in the doubleheader, including a two-hit game in game one and a double in game two.
- He also chipped in an RBI and a run scored.
- Ostberg joined Vulgamore with four-game hit streaks to open the 2021 season as he also picked up three hits in the doubleheader with a double, RBI and two runs scored
- Dakota Herman (Oxnard, California) provided some valuable relief innings in game two, striking out five batters in four innings without a hit, but allowed four runs (two earned) on four walks and three hit batters.
- Lutz also went 3 for 6 in the doubleheader and had a key two-RBI single in game two for the Bobcats
- Jared Zimbardo (Middlesex, New Jersey) made the first two starts of his Quinnipiac career on Sunday, and had an impressive three walks in game two as he reached base three times.
- McGwire Tuffy (Robbinsville, New Jersey) also made his Quinnipiac debut as a defensive replacement before getting an at bat in game two.
- Quinnipiac kicks off a stretch of 10 consecutive road games next weekend with a pair of doubleheaders at Rider beginning on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Sonny Pittaro Field in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
