HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team opens a stretch of 10 consecutive road games Friday as the Bobcats travel to Lawrenceville, New Jersey, to take on the Rider Broncs in its second MAAC weekend of the season
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac opened the season with a 5-0 shutout of the Monmouth Hawks before dropping three straight games as the Hawks took the opening series. The Bobcats never went down without a fight, fighting back in both games of Sunday's doubleheader but just coming up short.
Scouting Rider
The Broncs enter the weekend with a 3-1 recorded after dominating Niagara in the weekend series to open the 2021 season. Rider had a pair of shutouts in the series, including an 8-inning, 1-0 win in the seven-inning game to open the season. Sean McGeehan led the Broncs to open the season with a .333 batting average as well as four runs scored and 5 RBIs. Three different Broncs had three hits and four runs. Both Frank Doelling and Pete Soporowski pitched shutouts to open the season as Soporowski had nine strikeouts in eight innings while Doelling had eight strikeouts in seven innings. The Rider pitching staff has a 2.03 ERA this season.

Quinnipiac is 7-8 all-time against Rider in 15 meetings dating back to 2002. The Bobcats most recently swept the three-game series with the Broncs on April 27 and 29, 2019, including a pair of wins with more than 15 runs scored.
Lord Vulgamore
Evan Vulgamore had a dominant opening weekend for the Bobcats as he had an eye-popping 1.767 OPS behind a .500 batting average with a .600 on base percentage and 1.167 slugging percentage. He had hits in all four games and now has an eight-game hitting streak dating back to March 7, 2020. Vulgamore had four of his six hits go for extra bases, including two home runs.
Vulgamore now has 25 career home runs, good for fourth in Division I program history and eighth all-time in program history. He also recorded the 120th RBI of his career, ranked third in Division I program history and eighth all-time in program history.
Garcia's on Fire
Brandyn Garcia was dealing in his first start of the season as he pitched a career-high six innings with eight strikeouts. Garcia scattered two hits over his six scoreless innings for his first career win.
Osti Spimonti
Ian Ostberg recorded hits in four straight games to extend his hitting streak to six games dating back to March 10, 2020, at Furman. Ostberg led the Bobcats with seven hits, including a three-hit game in game two of the Saturday doubleheader. He scored five runs to tie for the team lead, and clubbed two doubles.
Looter
Dylan Lutz tied for the third-most hits on the team with five to open the season. Lutz had a two-RBI single for the Bobcats in the second set of doubleheaders, and had hits in three of four games to open the season.
Dr. Dre
Andre Marrero was an on-base machine to open the season with four hits and four walks, as well as a double and three RBIs. He had a two-run single in the first game of the season before adding a pair of hits in game one of Sunday's doubleheader and a double and two walks in game two.
CB Radio
Colton Bender was the other Bobcat to homer in the opening weekend as the Bobcats' backstop tried to help spark a late-inning comeback in the final game of the weekend. Bender had five hits on the weekend with a double, home run, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Bubba's Burgers
Arthur Correira also had an impressive first start for the Bobcats as he set a career-high with nine strikeouts over six innings. He scattered eight hits with two runs (one earned) but took the no decision Sunday as the Bobcats ultimately came up short.
Goldfish
Derek Goldrick finished off Garcia's scoreless outing for the combined shutout as he struck out the side in the five-run win. Goldrick now has four strikeouts to open the season.
