Baseball Comes Up Short in Doubleheader at Rider

Garcia and Seitter Shine in Starts Can't Capitalize Friday
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Quinnipiac baseball team dropped a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Rider as the Broncs took game one, 2-1, and game two, 8-5, in MAAC Baseball action.
Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire) extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single in game one and RBI double in game two to lead the Bobcats.
Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) had a two-hit game in game one while Dylan Lutz (Denver, Colorado) and Michael Kohn (Rockville, Maryland) each had two-hit games in game two.
Brandyn Garcia (Granby, Connecticut) took a hard-luck loss in game one as he allowed just two runs on two hits with four strikeouts over the six inning, complete game effort.
The Bobcats trailed 2-0 in that game heading into the top of the seventh inning before Vulgamore drove home Bender with an RBI single but the Bobcats couldn't get any more across as one runner was thrown out at home trying to tie the game later in the inning.
Kevin Seitter (Ridgewood, New Jersey) was masterful in four innings of work in the start, striking out six batters over four scoreless innings as the Bobcats staked him out to a 5-0 lead.
Quinnipiac couldn't hold on to the lead as Rider scored eight runs in the sixth inning before Colin Donnelly (Flemington, New Jersey settled down the arms and struck out three batters in 2.1 scoreless innings as he kept the Broncs off the board and the Bobcats in reach.

- He was swiftly brought around to score on an RBI single to center from Vulgamore to pull the Bobcats within a run.

FIRST INNING
- Lutz led off the game with a single to center and moved up to second after Bender drew a one-out walk.
- Vulgamore ripped a double to left centerfield that scored Lutz and moved Bender into scoring position at third.
- With runners in scoring position, Ostberg had an RBI groundout to second to score Bender before Vulgamore came home on a wild pitch to take a quick 3-0 lead.
- Michael Kohn (Rockville, Maryland) reached on an error by the second baseball and moved up to second as Danny Melnick (Hamilton, New Jersey) was hit by a pitch.
- Kyle Maves (Burlington, Ontario) reached on a bunt single to load the bases before Kohn came home to score on a wild pitch.
- Lutz walked to reload the bases and after a pitching change, Marrero lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Melnick but the Bobcats left runners on the corners to end the inning.
- Vulgamore had hits in both games to extend his hitting streak to 10 games dating back to March 7, 2020.
- He now has 122 RBIs in his career after an RBI in each game as he pulls within 10 RBIs of tying the Division I program record of 132 held by Vincent Guglietti '15.
- Kohn had three hits in the doubleheader for the Bobcats including a 2 for 4 performance in game two where he came home to score a run.
- Lutz also had three hits in the doubleheader, and had an impressive game two as he reached base three times with a double and a run scored.
- Bender was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored before coming home to score in game two after a walk.
- Garcia went the distance in game one for his second straight six-inning start
- He allowed just two hits on Friday and has allowed only four hits all season long
- Seitter impressed in his first start of the season as he struck out six batters for the second straight appearance.
- He now has 12 strikeouts in just seven innings of work, and has yet to allow a run on just four hits in seven innings.
- The Bobcats and Broncs wrap up their series on Saturday with first pitch in game one of the doubleheader set for 12 p.m. at Sonny Pittaro Field.
