Softball Splits with Rider on Opening Day

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Quinnipiac softball team split the Opening Day double header at Rider with a 7-5 win over the Broncs and a 5-8 loss. Sophomore Katerine Rodriguez led the Bobcats on the day with two runs, three hits and three RBIs. Graduate student Tiffany Kennedy-Cummings earned her first win of the season in the circle. First-year Gianna Palmisano had a stellar Quinnipiac debut with three hits and three run.
Highlights Game 1 (W, 7-5):
Fifth Inning – Rider held on to a 2-0 lead until the fifth inning as the Bobcats came storming back to score six runs. After sophomore Katherine Rodriguez was walked, first-year Kayla Thomas singled down the left field line and advanced to second. First-year Gianna Palmisano was on third at the time and scored. First-year Karolyn Walker walked, and junior Bridget Nasir was hit by a pitch, allowing Rodriguez to score. Off of a dropped center field fly hit by senior Brighid Douglas, Nasir, Walker and Thomas all scored to give Quinnipiac a 5-2 lead. Junior Hannah Davis sent a single to right field and recorded an RBI as Douglas scored.
Sixth Inning – After Rodriguez tallied a double, senior Kayla Jensen scored to give the Bobcats a 7-4 lead. Quinnipiac would hold on to a 7-5 lead and earn the first game victory.
Notable Stats:
First Inning - The Bobcats jumped to an early 2-0 lead after loading the bases and scoring when Douglas was walked. Shortly after, Nasir was walked and allowed Rodriguez to score.
Second Inning – Palmisano singled to left field to get the Bobcats on base in the second inning. Sophomore Sydney Tedim grounded out a sacrifice to allow Palmisano to score and give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead.
Fourth Inning – With first-year Ela Henry on third, Palmisano on second and Jensen on third, Rodriguez singled up the middle and recorded two RBIs to tie the game 5-5.
Rider would score three runs in the bottom of the fourth and would hold on to win the second game 8-5.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Rider. The Broncs and Bobcats will finish the season series with a double header in Lawrenceville.
