Eight Different Players Score Goals, 17 Record Points in Dominant Men's Ice Hockey Win
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Eight different Bobcats scored goals and 17 different skaters recorded a point Saturday evening as the No. 11/11 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team routed the Colgate Raiders, 9-0, at Class of 1965 Arena.
Quinnipiac's 9-0 win was its largest against an ECAC Hockey opponent since blanking Cornell, 10-0, in the 2013 ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals on March 16, 2013.
Zach Metsa (Delafield, Wisconsin) led the Bobcats as the only player with two goals while Guus van Nes (Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Netherlands) had a game-high three points, all on assists.
Christophe Fillion (Sherbrooke, Quebec), Ethan Leyh (Anmore, British Columbia) and Joey Cipollone (Purchase, New York) each had a goal and an assist while Skyler Brind'Amour (Raleigh, North Carolina), Matthew Fawcett (Lincoln, Rhode Island) and Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) all had two assists in the winning effort.
The Bobcats scored three goals in the first period and added two more in the second to take a 5-0 lead before piling on four more goals in the third period to complete the dominant win. Quinnipiac also went 4 for 8 on the power play.
Quinnipiac's nine-goal victory was its second time scoring as many goals in a game this season after opening the season with a 9-2 win over Sacred Heart on Dec. 14.
Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) stopped all 17 shots he faced in the first 44:11 of the game before Yaniv Perets (Dollards-des-Ormeaux, Quebec) came in to make eight saves and closed out the combined shutout effort. The win was the Bobcats' fifth shutout of the season.

SCORING SUMMARY
- (9:50, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 1, Colgate 0: Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colorado) got the scoring started midway through the first period as he collected a pass from the right boards and although his initial shot was saved, Smilanic gathered his rebound and roofed a backhander as he fell to the ice.
- (11:33, 1st period – PP) – Quinnipiac 2, Colgate 0: Peter DiLiberatore (Bedford, Nova Scotia) stopped a clear attempt and played the puck across the blue line to Metsa. After faking a drop off for Tufto, Metsa carried the puck into the high slot and wristed the puck through a screen past Colgate goaltender Carter Gylander.
- (18:10, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 3, Colgate 0: Fillion rounded out the scoring in the first period as Tufto carried the puck through all three zones and backhanded a pass from the right circle to Fillion in the slot where he wristed past Gylander's glove.
- (2:57, 2nd period – PP) – Quinnipiac 4, Colgate 0: With the Bobcats on the power play, van Nes played it to Jayden Lee (North Vancouver, British Columbia) at the point who hit Nick Bochen (North Vancouver, British Columbia) in the Ovechkin slot with the pass. Bochen went back to Lee at the point and his wrister went through traffic and into the back of the net.
- (17:16, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 5, Colgate 0: Leyh got a goal of his own in the later stages of the second period as Brind'Amour chased down a dump from Fawcett and backhanded a pass off Gylander's stick that Leyh gathered and backhanded through Gylander's five-hole.
- (00:47, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 6, Colgate 0: The Bobcats picked up the third period where they left off in the second with a goal on an odd-man rush as van Nes carried it up the right and passed it to Burgart on his left. Desi Burgart (North Vancouver, British Columbia) continued the passing to Fillion on his left, who hit Burgart with a centering feed as he crashed the net for the tap-in goal.
- (3:46, 3rd period – PP) – Quinnipiac 7, Colgate 0: Metsa buried his second of the just under three minutes later as Ethan de Jong (North Vancouver, British Columbia) played a Metsa miss to Tufto along the left boards. Tufto waited before passing it to Metsa at the point, who walked in and fired a wrister to light the lamp.
- (3:58, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 8, Colgate 0: Cipollone fired home his first as a Bobcat 12 seconds later as the Bobcats won the faceoff and Iivari Räsänen (Tampere, Finland) played the puck up to van Nes at the red line who looked to his right for Cipollone with the pass. Cipollone walked into the offensive zone all alone before firing a wrister past Andrew Farrier's blocker to make it 8-0 Bobcats.
- (17:59, 3rd period – PP) – Quinnipiac 9, Colgate 0: Colgate failed to clear the puck and Cipollone knocked it down near the blue line. Cipollone played it to Fawcett near the end line, who found TJ Friedmann (St. Louis, Missouri) all alone on the doorstep to beat Farrier for the Bobcats fourth goal of the third period.

NOTES
- Quinnipiac's 9-0 shutout of Colgate was its largest against an ECAC Hockey opponent since blanking Cornell, 10-0, in Game Two of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals on March 16, 2013.
- The Bobcats scored nine goals in a game for the second time this season, and it was just the second time scoring at least nine goals against an ECAC Hockey opponent since that 10-0 shutout of Cornell.
- Quinnipiac was 4 for 8 on the power play to snap a 1 for 27 streak, and Saturday was the second time this season with at least four power-play goals in a game after scoring five on AIC on Dec. 26.
- Metsa scored two goals in a game for the first time in his career to lead the Bobcats Saturday night
- Metsa now has nine career multi-point games
- His goal was his fifth of the season, tied for his career-high, and also reach the 20-point mark in a season for the first time in his career
- Metsa is the first defenseman to hit the 20-point mark in 2020-21.
- van Nes led the Bobcats with his first career three-point game and fourth career multi-point effort
- He now has double-digit assists in a season for the first time in his career with 11.
- Tufto recorded two assists for his 10th multi-point effort of the season, giving him 46 in his career and at least 10 multi-point games in each of his four seasons.
- He moved past Bryan Leitch '09 on the Quinnipiac all-time assists list with the 117th of his career, trailing only Reid Cashman '07 with 125 in program history.
- Tufto also became just the fourth Bobcat in Division I program history to record four consecutive 30-point seasons, joining Matthew Peca '15, Leitch and Brian Herbert '03.
- Tufto is just the second player to reach the 30-point mark this season after Wisconsin's Cole Caufield.
- Cipollone recorded his second straight two-point night with a goal and an assist.
- His goal was his first as a Bobcat and Cipollone now has a goal and four assists for five points this season after a four-point weekend.
- Fillion tallied his first career two-point game with a goal and an assist Saturday, and is averaging a point per game over his last three games.
- Leyh also had a goal and an assist for the Bobcats for his second multi-point effort of the season after a three-point game in the opener.
- He is one point away from tying his career-high of 10 as a rookie last season.
- Fawcett continued his impressive tear of late with yet another two-point game, recording a career-high two assists.
- Fawcett now has four multi-point games this season and finished the weekend with four points
- He now has six points over his last four games on three goals and three assists.
- Brind'Amour notched his first multi-point game of the season and fifth of his career with a pair of assists Saturday
- He now has seven assists and nine points in his sophomore campaign.
- Smilanic scored his 12th goal of the season to start the scoring in Saturday's rout to move into a tie for the national rookie lead and a tie for fourth in the nation
- Burgart's goal was his ninth of the season, tied for 22nd in the nation and is third on the team in scoring
- Lee found the back of the net for the second time this season to set a career-high in goals as the sophomore defensemen now has two goals and seven points.
- Friedmann also scored for the second time this season for his sixth career goal
- Räsänen recorded a point for a second straight night as he tallied an assist for his third helper of the season and fourth point.
- He now has three points in his last four games.
- DiLiberatore picked up his first point since Jan. 15 at Colgate for his 12th assist of the season and 16th point.
- He ranks third on the team in assists and fifth in points.
- Michael Lombardi (Barrington, Rhode Island) also recorded an assist for his seventh helper of the season and tied his career-high with his ninth point.
- He has four points over his last four games with a goal and three assists in that span.
- de Jong picked up an assists for his ninth helper and 19th point, pulling with one of his second career 20-point season
- Bochen recorded an assist for his first point since Jan. 17 against the Raiders as he now has three assists to go along with his three goals.
- Perets made his Quinnipiac debut with 14:49 remaining in the third period as he made eight saves in relief of Petruzzelli, who lowered his GAA to 1.66 and is now 10th in the nation with a .933 save percentage.
- The Bobcats are off next weekend and return to the ice with a weekend series against the St. Lawrence Saints in Canton, New York, on Feb. 26 and 27 at Appleton Arena.
- Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. each night and both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ in the United States and Internationally on Stretch Internet.
