Petruzzelli Named Player and Goaltender of the Week, Smilanic Earns Second Straight Rookie Honor
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team swept the ECAC Hockey Weekly Awards this week as senior goaltender Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) was named the league's Player and Goaltender of the Week while Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colorado) earned his second straight Rookie of the Week honors.
This is the first time since Oct. 27, 2015, that the Bobcats swept the ECAC Hockey Awards and first time since Michael Garteig '16 on Dec. 30, 2014, that a Quinnipiac goaltender was named the ECAC Hockey Player and Goaltender of the Week.
Petruzzelli earned his first-ever ECAC Hockey Player of the Week honors and fourth Goaltender of the Week award while Smilanic picked up his second rookie of the week honors. Smilanic is the first rookie to win back-to-back rookie of the week awards since Andrew Shortridge '20 on Feb. 28 and March 8, 2017.
Petruzzelli had a stellar week for the Bobcats in net as he recorded a pair of shutouts in the Bobcats weekend sweep of the Colgate Raiders in two 3-0 wins. He stopped all 38 shots he faced on the weekend and was the only goaltender in the nation with two shutouts this week.
With his pair of weekend shutouts, Petruzzelli extended his overall shutout streak to three games and became the 27th goaltender in NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Division I history, and second in program history, with three straight shutouts. His current shutout streak of 198:57 is the second-longest in program history, trailing only Garteig's of 209:31 from the 2015-16 season.
Petruzzelli is now tied for the national lead with 10 wins and 15 starts, and ranks second with four shutouts. He also ranks in the top 10 with a 1.77 GAA and has a .930 save percentage.
Smilanic continues to light the lamp for the Bobcats with a stellar start to his Quinnipiac career as he had two goals in Sunday's 3-0 win over Colgate for his second career two-goal game. He has goals in eight of 15 games this season.
He is tied for second in the nation with 10 goals, and is one of just three players to record 10 goals so far in 2020-21. Only Arizona State first year Matthew Kopperud (12) has scored more goals this season than Smilanic.
Smilanic is just the 15th Quinnipiac men's ice hockey first year to record 10 goals in his rookie season since the program went Division I in the 1998-99 season.
The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team returns to action this weekend with a three-game series at Clarkson beginning Friday at 5 p.m. followed by a pair of 4 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday.
