Tufto Picks Up Player of the Week, Smilanic Rookie of the Week for Bobcats
ALBANY, N.Y. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey captain Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) has been named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week and first year Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colorado) has been named the Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday, Jan. 11.
Tufto's weekly honors is his second of the season after earning First Star of the Week on Dec. 28. He has now earned five ECAC Hockey Player of the Week awards in his career while Smilanic earned the first weekly honor from the league office in his career.
The Bobcats have now earned six weekly honors since beginning the season on Dec. 14 after earning the First and Second Stars of the Week on Dec. 21 and Dec. 28.
Tufto had an impressive three-game series against #10/10 Clarkson as he led all ECAC Hockey skaters with five assists and five points, as well as recording 32 faceoff wins in the series.
He recorded assists in all three games, extending his point streak to a career-best 10 games. It is the longest point streak by a Bobcat since Sam Anas '16 had a 16-game point streak in the 2015-16 season, and is also the second-longest active point streak in the nation behind North Dakota's Jordan Kawaguchi (11 games).
Tufto comfortably leads the nation with 20 assists and 24 points through the Bobcats' first 13 games, and also leads all centers with a .663 faceoff percentage.
Smilanic has been one of the most dominant first years in the nation and that was on display this weekend with two goals and three assists against the Golden Knights. Smilanic had points in all three games, and now has points in six of his last seven.
Smilanic moved into a tie for third in the nation in goals with eight after his two-goal weekend, and is tied for second among rookies nationally. He is also tied for fifth among rookies with three power-play goals.
So far this season, Smilanic has eight goals and three assists for 11 points.
The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team returns to the ice this weekend with a home-and-home series against the Colgate Raiders beginning Friday night in Hamilton at Class of 1965 Arena with puck drop set for 5 p.m. Both teams return to Hamden Sunday for a 4 p.m. showdown.
Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+ in the U.S. and internationally on Stretch Internet.
